Undergraduate Pre-Veterinary Internship with PGSPCA

The SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George's County (also known as PGSPCA) is now accepting veterinary assistant internship applications for the coming year!! For those looking to improve their animal handling and veterinary assistant skills, as well as learn more about animal welfare, shelter medicine, general pet care, and spay/neuter, this hands-on opportunity is definitely one to consider.

PGSPCA holds several spay-neuter surgery clinics and one vaccine clinic a month (a mix of weekends and weekdays). Each intern is expected to attend one or two clinics a month, with the internship cycle extending into the summer of 2024. You get to work closely alongside veterinarians and veterinary technicians while enjoying a level of access and exposure that extends beyond that of a general volunteer. Interns are exposed to a variety of companion animals and veterinary procedures, as well as animal welfare policy and protocol. You will learn and regularly practice safe and humane animal restraint techniques and basic veterinary procedures, and you'll have the opportunity to observe surgical procedures up-close. You'll also gain valuable insight and experience in customer service and public outreach. Lastly, you'll have the satisfaction of helping animals and owners who really need it.

And as PGSPCA volunteers, clinic interns can get free vaccinations and microchips for their pets, plus discounts on veterinary procedures at our clinic. You'll also have the opportunity to get involved with other aspects of the organization if you so choose, such as fostering, animal transport, cruelty/neglect prevention, and humane education.
