Hello and welcome back to campus!

I am helping our MANRRS chapter put together a mentoring/career event that will be very relevant to the pre-vet society in general, and its members of color in particular.  The event details are below.  Please share this with your club membership as a "save the date."  We will send out additional marketing materials in a couple of weeks.  The panel "Safeguarding Animal Health and Welfare,"is all DVMS working in the area - one clinical, one at USDA, and one in vet school herself.
Thanks,
Dr. Balcom

Event overview:  "Together, we can"--  A curated event for UMD students  to hear "real life" stories and advice from friends and alumni of the College of AGNR who are in various stages of their careers . Guest speakers will share a sense of “how I made it” as a person in a minoritized group working in various food, agriculture, environmental, and veterinary medical related industries.

The evening will start with a short welcome speech and a pizza dinner for everyone. Then, we will have three concurrent, small group sessions - "Where Policy and Practice Meet", "Safeguarding Animal Health and Welfare," and "Natural Resources for a better tomorrow".

Logistics: Date is set for Thursday, February 29th.   The event starts at 6:30pm in the Plant sciences building on the UMD campus and will run until 8:00pm.
Parking in Regents Dr. Garage is conveniently across the street.

Goals: This event aims to

  • Provide students in AGNR and related majors, and especially students of color, a vision of themselves as successful professionals in related careers.

  • Foster a sense of belonging - students see themselves as part of something bigger than just slogging through a major.

  • Set up the possibility of mentoring opportunities for interested students and speakers.
