I have been getting requests to sign up from what I think are spurious
"people". I am requesting that they send me a brief sentence
explaining their interest in fractals. I got 2 yesterday who haven't
replied, and 4 today, sent within 4 minutes of each other.

I looked at the settings and I have set a question to be answered on
requesting to join, which basically asks their interest in the group.
Presumably the answer would be included in the notifying email; none
of these "folks" ... or bots... answered the question.
