Hi Lorenzo,

Sorry that nobody has replied to your message so far. Let me assure you there are quite a few of us active with the project and I'm confident we shall (eventually) address your questions. Please keep in mind that a factor of open-source projects is that at least most of us have higher priorities with real jobs and so on...

If you'd like to chat, please add me in google chat and I'll work with you in helping to manage your goals.

Kind regards, Robert.

Hi Lorenzo,

There's a few of us still about. I've got a Compass 6hv sitting in the corner that I purchased especially for this project :). Alas not enough time in the day. yet to get my board up and running. I can perhaps help from a controls/theoretical perspective though...

If you're jumping on for the first time and have a bit of spare time on your hands you might like to have a quick look at matlab. There used to be a simulink quadcopter model on the matlab file exchange (you'l need the simulink toolbox). This is where I intend to start.  I will be doing a system identification of my chopper as soon as I have some spare time. From there I will be designing my controller within simulink (heaps of fantastic tools) and using the UDB to implement. Which-ever board you end up going with this is would be a great approach (IMO). Certainly the approach used in industry (I'm doing my PhD in controls).

Good luck in your endeavours!

Kind regards,

Oliver

Hi Lorenzo,

Matlab has a quite a wide support network for users. Any files you are likely to need will be on the Matlab File Exchange.
I just did a google search for 'quadcopter' and 'matlab'.

Simulink models:
http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/42666-quadrotor-dynamics-modelling-using-simulink
http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/42666-quadrotor-dynamics-modelling-using-simulink
http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/45693-quad-copter-model
http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/41149-pd-control-quadrotor-simulink

Simmechanics
http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/44902-quadrotor-modelling-and-control-with-simmechanics

Any model that lists published work in the form of conference or journal papers is likely to be of reasonable fidelity. Once you've designed your controller and got a good feel for things you may wish to alter the mass/scale of the model to best represent your own build (this will make sure your control gains are within cooey when it comes to implementation). If you've got a joystick you will be able to add a block tso that you can fly these models in to real-time (dependendant on the computational power of your platform of course).

There was, and I'm sure there still is a simulink model on the file exchange which was developed to compliment at text book on control systems design. Might be worth another quick look, though any of the above are likely to be more than suitable

Cheers,

Oliver
