Hey All,
I'm working up a route for a motorcycle ride in June. Starting and
ending in Minneapolis. Ride as of now is heading out to St. Croix.
Down to Nelson on 35 cross back over on 25. Heading back on a route,
that I'm not quite sure of yet. Might head west and come back
straight south of the cities.
I'm looking for side road jaunts that would be interesting to head
down along the way. Any sort of fun route back or odd sites I should
hit up would be great too.
Oh did I mention I'm from Chicago and haven't ridden the river yet?
Plus I'll probably be riding a 67 BSA Hornet.
Thanks!
Mark

Mark,

Do you have a computer and any mapping software? If you had Mapsource (from Garmin) or Streets and Trips (my favorite) I could send you a file with a really fun route that zig-zags through sw Wisconsin, and never very far from the Mississippi.

I've ridden in every state except Hawaii, and I've yet to find better motorcycle roads than right at our doorstep in sw Wisconsin.

On your way home to Minneapolis, one last fun road before you get to the boring roads is Minnesota 60. You pick it up at Wabasha (which is on Highway 61) and go west to U.S. 52, then take boring 52 home.

There are stretches of 60 that are posted 50 mph, and stretches posted for 55. I've seen patrol cars on that stretch the last two weekends. I've never been stopped for doing five over, but I have for 10 over (just got a warning, though).

If you don't have mapping software and computers, keep your eye out for a highly detailed map of sw Wisconsin. Sometimes you see them in motorcycle shops around here. Far more detail than the state highway maps, or Rand McNally.

These are perfect roads for your BSA. Lots and lots of curves and hills and valleys. Most of them are paved, and keep your eye out for gravel in the corners.

Wisconsin 35 is drop-dead beautiful and highly recommended. But after you've done that a couple of times, you owe it to yourself to make your way south along the river valley, but inland from 35.
