Among the death warrants was one for Arif who, after a quarrel with Mustafa Kemal, had joined the opposition. {Olum fermanlari arasinda bir tanesi, bir tartismadan sonra, muhalefete gecen, Arif icindi.}

 

Arif, his one friend, who had stood loyal beside him throughout all the black days of the War for Independence-the only man to whom he had opened his heart and shown himself intimately. {Arif, Istiklal Harbi'nin karanlik gunlerinde kalbini actigi, icini doktugu, hep yaninda kendisine bagli kalan yegane arkadasi idi.}

 

One who was there reported that when he came to this warrant the Ghazi's gray mask of a face never changed; he made no remark; he did not hesitate. {(Olum fermanlari imzalanirken) orada olan birisinin anlattigina gore, sira Arif'in fermanina gelince, Gazi'nin yuzundeki soguk maske hic degismedi; hic bir sey soylemedi; hic tereddut etmedi.} [Orada olan birisi dedigi kisi muhtemelen Latife Hanim'dir; cunku, bosandiktan sonra Latife Hanim Isvicre'ye gitti ve orada bir hafta boyunca HG Armstrong'un kaldigi otelde kaldi ve uzun uzun konustuklari biliniyor/Gunes]

Sigarayi, sigara tablasinin kenarina koydu, Arif'in olum fermanini, sanki rutin bir kagit imzalar gibi imzaladi ve sonraki fermana dondu.}
