Has anyone else already started a judicial externship through their
host school? The student handbook just announced today that we will
not receive credit towards our degrees for this. I've already started
with a federal magistrate judge and feel it would look very poorly on
Tulane if I had to quit the externship to get credits that will
transfer. Is anyone else in the same boat?

I'm actually trying to get externship credit that's through a clinic at
U of H (which I may not be able to do because their normal policy is to
not allow visiting students to participate in any of that stuff). It's
called "externship" but it's part of the clinical program. Tulane will
count clinics but not externships. ERG! Not enough guidance.

Since we're not supposed to contact the law school higher-ups, maybe
have the dean/advisor at the school where you've been visiting contact
them? It also says the policy is effective as of the date of the post.
If you were already registered, it wasn't effective when you
registered. All you knew is that they were accepting ABA-accredited
school credits. Wonder if that argument will work on them...

Good luck.

I was in the process of getting my externship set up through Berkeley
as well. It's possible that the office I'm going to work with now will
not accept me because I'm not getting credit. It's a big mess up in the
air. I'm curious if anybody knows the reasons why Tulane doesn't accept
externship credit when other really great schools do.

I wrote Colleen Timmons about the externship credit situation and this
is the response I got:

"I have brought your concerns (along with other students who have
written in with similar requests) to the administration. We are going
to be looking into amending the policy regarding externships. I will
have a modification posted to the handbook supplement within a day or
two after I have received additional details.

Thank you,

Colleen Timmons"

My impression is there are a lot of us in this situation and they will
be making an exception. The policy of no externship credit is
apparently a pre-existing one, but none of us have had access to the
book (unless of course you remembered to evacuate with it).

I noticed that most of you posting are 2L's, and I would specifically
ask Colleen Timmons whether the externship exception she jsut posted to
the handbook applies to 2Ls as well as 3Ls. It was my understanding
that alot of the anger towards the no externship credit was coming from
3Ls, since we are the ones who would be recieving credit through
Tulane's formal externship program this semester if we were in New
Orleans.
