I wanted to let you know what my husband and other pilots found:
The uptown area looks in tact and safe. Nashville had downed and
upturned trees but the flood waters did not appear to reach the main
uptown area. Right now there are National Guard troops patrolling the
area too - one on every corner we heard. The majority of the looting
was along Tchoupitoulas.
My numbers are 504-376-5351 and 504-376-5352 sometimes they work and
sometimes not. Again, take care. Shelley

Any idea if Orleans Parish residents are ever going to be allowed back
in for a day to get their stuff (like they did in Jeff Parish?). My
family is kind of in limbo waiting to be told if they can go back in,
before relocating temporarily further away...Also how would this work
for students who might not have Louisiana licenses but have their stuff
in dorms/apartments? School ID? I know this isnt completely directly
related to the post but no one seems to know...Thanks anyone who might
have some idea!

Hey Kim,

This would be my suggestion. Have you University ID, that will proably
be enough. But then try to bring something else that shows your
address is you have it.

A bill printed from online (cell phone, entergy, etc.) or bill or any
mail you might have with you or get your hands on.

If you do a mail forwarding order, you may even be able to get some
stuff to where you are now before returning to NOLA. I heard stuff was
backing up and they are eager to get rid of the stuff and get it to the
resident.

Regardless, you will probably be able to get back in, but if it is like
Jeff Parish, you will undoubtedly want to make it as painless for
everyone as possible.

Just some suggestions. Good luck!

Hi Kim -

I just went back this weekend. I went in by Causeway to River road and
had to pass through three checkpoints from Baton Rouge to my end point
in the Garden District, but only at one was I asked to show i.d. and
proof of address. At all the others, they just asked me who I was and
what I was doing there and I pointed to the empty boxes in my van and
said that I was there to pick up my belongings and leave. I did bring
proof of my enrollment at American and a copy of my itinerary proving
that I'd be leaving just in case. I would say go for it, but be sure
to bring flash lights, gas, boots if you expect it to be wet, a cooler
to keep your drinks cool (it is so damn hot w/o air conditioning!) and
make sure you have a spare tire in your car in case you get a flat.
There is a lot of debris on the road. If you have questions, e-mail me
at nee...@aol.com
