Just wondering what others are doing about payment for health
insurance. I spoke to a rep from Chickering who said that the
enrollment form (due 10/1/05) must be sent in with premium payment --
unless the student wrote their own check and directly sent it to
Chickering for fall semester health insurance. The rep said that he
wasn't sure how Tulane will be handling it if financial aid money was
earmarked for health insurance, but didn't make its way to Chickering.
I would think that Tulane would credit the student for spring semester,
but I haven't been able to get a definitive on this question. I'm still
working on it. Does anyone else have info on this ? Thanks.

The school I'm visiting let me enroll in their health insurance plan
with no issue. If you're visiting, I recommend you check with you dean.

If you go to the chickering website, they actually have a form you send
in. One of the options is that you've given the money to Tulane and
that you know it will be verified later. Since Tulane has the money
earmarked for it, you don't have to send anything in.

Thanks for your reply. I called Chickering and spoke to a rep. He said
that they have no way of verifying that money was earmarked/paid
through Tulane at this time. He said that unless the student wrote out
a check directly to chickering, they can't consider it paid. When asked
about if a credit could be applied to the following semester, he said
Tulane would need to reconcile regarding that matter. I emailed Tulane
and Georgia Whiddon to see if monies that were earmarked for health
insurance for fall could be applied to spring semester. I haven't heard
back from Tulane (it was just before they had to evacuate for Rita). I
heard back from Ms.Whiddon, but she did not have an answer -- she plans
to look into it. It's difficult because Chickering clearly states on
that form 'no refunds'. So I'm just hoping that if money was
earmarked, it can be applied to the spring semester. I know everything
was time-sensitive with the October 1st deadline.

Have you looked at the form that Chickering has on their website?
There is a box you can check that says:
"I previously enrolled and paid for the Student Health Insurance to
Tulane University. I understand this will be verified with Tulane and
understand no payment is required at this time."
You shouldn't have to pay them if Tulane has the funds for your health
insurance.

Thanks, Janet. I did look at the form, but I still think it's unclear-
especially since the rep from Chickering said that we needed to pay
because it couldn't be verified yet. Two separate calls were placed to
Chickering about this and both times they said we needed to pay.
Here is the question I posed to Ms. Whiddon:
> Date: 2005/09/20 Tue AM 07:41:02 EDT
> Hello Ms. Whiddon,
>... The rep at Chickering said that
when the student enrolls, he/she must send the premium in for the fall
semester
(unless the student sent the premium in him or herself previously).
The rep did
not know if the premium would have already been collected by Tulane.
> Question: If money for health insurance premium was already separated out
from financial aid loan money, and if that money was directed to
Chickering,
then can that money be used to pay for the next semester (spring 2006)
?
> Thank you,

Her response:

"Dear Ms. Foster:

I do not know the answer to your questions at this point, but if you
don't mind,
I'll use your questions as a investigatory springboard in one of the
many
discussion points I expect to be covered over the next few weeks as
Tulane works
on sorting out the financial situation (credits and payments) of our
students
for the 2005-06 academic year.

Ongoing discussions are scheduled by Tulane in Houston to cover all
manner of
questions, and the area of health insurance coverage and charges for
all student
enrollment scenarios should be covered.

Thank you for writing. I will write again as soon as I have some
information
for you.

Sincerely,

Georgia Whiddon
