I hope everyone is doing as well as can be expected given the
circumstances. Many of you have inquired as to the status of the
Journal in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Despite the adverse
circumstances we all face, the Senior Board has recommended that the
Journal continues operations. However, this is not a decision we can
make for you. None of us want to force something on you that you are
unwilling or unable to do. Nonetheless, we believe that these
difficult conditions offer a unique opportunity for both junior and
senior members.
Any person who is able to show the determination to succeed in such
adverse conditions would no doubt garner immense personal and
professional respect wherever they go after this year. It is not only
an opportunity for personal accomplishment, but would undoubtedly sell
well in an interview. The work you might do is no more than would be
expected previously, just under different circumstances. In fact, it
may in some respects be even easier, as no deadlines will be enforced
in this circumstance, and you will have no case note to write.
What will be asked of those that want to participate, is that after
receiving your articles electronically, you will edit the work using
Track Changes in Microsoft Word. You will do this on your own, while
in contact with your ME for support. When you and your Sub & Cite
partner finish your individual edits, you will then reconcile your
edits with each other by phone, IM, email, or in person (if you are at
the same location). Once this is done, you will forward the article to
your ME, who in turn will do his or her job before passing it on up the
editorial ladder. You will still need to gather your sources; what we
recommend is splitting them in half with your partner, and each
photocopying half. Then, when you return to Tulane, bring them with
you, and the ME will make sure they are sufficient. Keep track of your
copying costs, and the Journal will reimburse you at the beginning of
the Spring semester.
Obviously, our first choice is to enlist those students, junior and
senior, who had already been assigned the articles, because you are
familiar with these works. However, this is by no means a requirement
of any sort. Also, regardless of your ultimate decision, I would
greatly appreciate an email reponse to e...@tjicl.org, so we can
determine how many people are or are not available. Please trust me
when I say a response of "no" will not in any way be held against you.
I hope, however, that you all see this as an opportunity to defy
tragedy, to defy naysayers, and to prove to the country that our
Journal is one of the most powerful and enduring journals in the
nation.
Best regards,
Michael T. Wawrzycki
