Hello everyone,

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. We will be meeting as a group
soon--just need to get organized and find a good meeting time.

Sebastian has arranged for the Anthropology Collective to cosponsor an
event tonight. Luis Evelis Andrade has come from Columbia to give a
talk so come out and support this anthropological event and
discussion.

LECTURE AND CONVERSATION WITH:

Luis Evelis Andrade, president of the National Indigenous Organization
of Colombia.

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 21, 7:00 pm in PEARSON 104

The Latin American Studies Program Luis Evelis Andrade is the
president of the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia
(Organización Nacional Indígena de Colombia – ONIC), the largest
indigenous organization in Colombia and a key player in the struggle
for autonomy, collective rights, and the peaceful resolution of the
Colombian conflict. The indigenous movement in Colombia has struggled
peacefully for over thirty years to defend the territory, resources,
environment, and political, economic, and cultural rights of the
indigenous population in the midst of a violent social conflict. The
movement won significant political and territorial rights in the 1991
Constitution but those rights have yet to be fully respected or
implemented. Luis Evelis Andrade will discuss the proposals of ONIC
and of the indigenous peoples of the Andes for peaceful solutions to
the social and environmental crises of Colombia and the Americas.

Sponsored by American Studies Program, Anthropology Collective,
Anthropology Department, International Relations Program, Latin
American Studies Program, PANGEA, Romance Languages Department,
World Civilizations Program, Latino Center, Center for
Interdisciplinary Studies
