Hello everyone,

iShell is an amazing product. It has made many of us very happy and
along the way brought us some aggravating moments as well.
Writing software does that.

iShell has wonderful dedicated users, and tribalmedia has not been
stellar at supporting our users over the last 18 months. It is time
to put iShell into the hands of the users and ensure a future where iShell
may be further developed by its user base. With that said we will be
open sourcing iShell with a liberal license that allows commercial as
well as open source projects.

tribalmedia is dedicated to bringing our latest code to Mac and
Windows. This includes fixes for Windows 7 and Mac 10.6. A rewritten
Internet engine. A local SQLite implemenation. As well as the
goodies from Kromo, ZebraTools, and ImageLayer you have learned to not
be able to live without. This will become iShell 5 and be delivered in the
near future.

We will open a repository with the code on Google Code (possibly
source forge). This will provide a central repository
to download installers, and grab all the source code if one desires.
We can document in the wiki, track bugs in the issue tracker, and
always find the product itself.

tribalmedia will continue to provide support for iShell, through
Google Groups as we do today. There will be standard options to
purchase direct iShell support hours to get you over the hump. As
well as iShell engineering hours, to create any new feature you may
like or fix a bug that is a show stopper for your project.

Thank you for your support as we move through this transition. We
believe this will put iShell in a very good position for you, the
iShell developer to make great creations in the future.

Cheers,
Matt

I think I know the answer here, but is there any semi-easy way to
update old, like, version 2.5.3 projects (.kd) to something more
current?

yes moving your projects from v2.5.3 to the last available version 4.5 would require a complete rebuild.
Although i did several a while back and it was not that hard or time consuming - it depends on the complexity of your project.

I notice that the www.tribalmedia.com site is unavailable again atm and unsure where the open source version of ishell is 'at'.
In that regard - my subscription has expired and i'm not sure what to do with my legacy projects now as I can't open the editor to use it anymore.

You may like to consider runrev as an alternative platform.

Lloyd,

some time ago when I was in your situation, I was able to open an old
editor by winding back my computer's clock. I set it to a day before the
expiry date of the license and was able to open the project OK. Be
careful though as this may upset other programs depending on current
date and time.

The lack of a migration tool was always an issue with us and that was
one reason we moved our main app off iShell and into web technologies. I
still think iShell as an extension for a browser would be fantastic but
we're not going to get that now are we.......

Brian,

There is an iShell 2 -> 3 upgrade tool:

Download Library/Older Products/iShell 2 to 3 Upgrade
http://www.tribalmedia.com/downloads/software/Upgrade/Upgrade2to3.sit

Then open in ver 4 and walla.

Gil - Thanks, I'm thrilled to hear that. I found a G4 Mac, reinstalled OS9, reinstalled iShell 2.5.3, went through the Upgade2to3 instructions, but unfortunately nothing happens - it doesn't update anything. Do you suppose it needs a real license and not just the evaluation license?

OK, updating...using my old license, it did create a new project .xp file, but it won't convert any .kd to .xd documents.
Is the idea that you individually open each .kd doc with  this little "document file" button? It doesn't seem to work (??)

Ok
For the site access i'm still getting a 'can't connect to server' or 'can't establish a connection' message and nothing comes up in any browser here on different machines.
Might be a regional DNS or ISP thing - but I'm on one of the bigger ISP's out here in Australia and the DNS looks ok.
On lookup i get:
tribalmedia.com. 85964 IN A 64.84.47.28

I would like a license for at least editing older projects now that my ongoing Sub has expired.
What are the options?

Brian,

As you found from my email from way back, this was many moons ago. What I remember is that a doc can not have ANY plugins in it... I think... Change them to placeholders or comments and see if that works. Also, I assume you followed the directions in the doc:
How to Upgrade - Must Read.pdf in the upgrade tools folder, correct? There a number of critical steps.

Gil - Thanks...I realize this isn't exactly a hot issue. But it's weird, the Upgrade tool will convert 3 of about 50 .kd docs in the project, but that's it. The unconvertible .kd docs don't have any plug-ins.

Don't suppose there's anyone out there with a really, really long memory and some working knowledge of this obscure Update tool?

Mexico is going trough a very rough time and this info could help a bit.

Whit iShell 5 i would do it in a heartbeat.  I guess they will have to find somebody with Flash skills to pull it off.

Hi,

I just wondered if anyone has ever found a good way to produce graphs and charts from iShell, using data stored in tables? The user would chose which bits of the data to show, and I'd be happy with line charts/area charts to start with.

I've been looking at Google Charts and a company called FusionCharts, and both have products that require knowledge of e.g. PHP and MySQL, which are not impossible for me, but I thought I'd try an iShell alternative first.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Denis,

One way: send the data in a Tell Internet Post event to a web based app that will outout to a jpg at url specified in the post or a static url. Then load the jpg as an image. You just need to find the app to do the work.

Bar graphs would be simple enough in iShell, but would be a bit of a process.
