Burn Failed error

[Peter Bogdanoff]

When trying to burn my project, I get a "Burn failed" error after
inserting the DVD and it running for awhile (but not actually burning
anything). Tried this several times with the same problem.

Is there some general reasons why this would happen? I've burned this
project in the past, but not since last October.

Peter,

This rings a bell with me. I sometimes get a 'burn failed' error when
my DVD/CD burner had just been used by another app. In one case I'd
been watching a movie DVD, so DVDPlayer (Mac) still had control of the
burner (even though the movie disk had been removed) and would not
allow iShell to burn anything.

I cleared it by quitting DVD Player (and maybe rebooting... can't
quite remember), but starting afresh did the trick.

Hold down all 4 Keys. Command + Option + P + R
This is called zapping your Pram.

Neither restarting or restarting with zapping Pram worked.

I tried burning another smaller project with the same DVD media
(Linkyo [Taiyo Yuden] White Inkjet Hub Printable): Failed
Tried burning smaller project with CD media: Successful
Tried burning original project with different DVD media (Taiyo Yuden
Watershield Printable): Failed

Now I'm trying to copy new files to the old disk image and burn with
Toast with another disc writer. I don't know how to add the QT
installer file to the Windows side of the disc, so I'm going with the
old QT files already on the disc image. Will see what happens.

When I tried to burn from Toast with the same internal Optiarc DVD drive, I got this somewhat more informative message:

The drive reported an error:

Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR

Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03

Tried again with the external Pioneer DVR-111D. Success with burning in Toast.

The internal Optiarc reads the new disc OK. It may be time to replace or disconnect the internal Optiarc. iShell, of course, will only write to the first drive it finds which is the bad internal drive. Toast allows me to choose.

What a lot of folks don't know is that which CD/DVDs a drive can write to is actually controlled by a list, inside the ROM of the drive itself (and, of course, the drive software.)

So, before I trashed the burner, I'd check with the manufacture's site, and see if there is a firmware upgrade available for it.

Another trick to get a particular drive selected in iShell, is to select it as the default burner in iTunes. That worked for me about 60% of the time. (I tried for literally years to get them to put in a selector for the burn drive, going so far as to even provide the source code to do it (about 3 lines, as I recall, since it's just a toolbox call.) Never did hear a good reason it wasn't done....

Try this: click on a playlist; click on burn; choose the burner from the list.

Thanks for that...

iShell still chooses the internal ATAPI drive rather than the USB drive.

I can't find a driver update for the DVR and it now seems to have
trouble reading discs as well.

Also, trying to replace files in the old disc image works--on a Mac.
The Windows side wasn't written. I know there's a way to do all that
manually, but at this point I'll move over to my Mac at home and burn
the disc.

yes this sounds like your drive is broke...
only time i've had sense errors like that is when the actual drive is failing.
luckily they are not all that expensive to replace these days...
