Someone mentioned that the hose had to be special stuffing box hose. What
is the difference between that and standard wire exhaust hose? Where do you
get it. I plan to replace mine when I haul.

The water feed to my stuffing boxes is clear 1/4" plastic as is fed from the
exhaust elbow.

Not sure about the exact difference ( the technicals I mean), except that it
is very strong, stiff hose, in lengths of about 6 or 8 inches, manufactured
just for that purpose. When I hauled my boat a couple of years ago, I
dismantled the stuffing boxes, (they were giving me no trouble other that
the packing needing replaced) since I had the shafts out to be checked, and
cleaned them up and replaced the hoses. The old ones looked fine, but they
were 15 years old, and who knows. I feel better that I KNOW what I have now.
I bought them at a place called "AER Marine Supply" which is a wholesale
only place in Seabrook, Tx. I'm sure any good marine supply would have them
or could get them. I agree that no more than these things cost, there's no
reason to save a couple of bucks on something so critical when there is
something made especially for that purpose.

George,

I believe it was me who mentioned it in a discussion of dripless seals.
Brent is quite correct. Once you see a real stuffing box hose, the difference
will become obvious. I purchased mine through the yard but the manufacturer is
Buck-Algonquin, a manufacturer of bronze stuff. I would imagine that there are
others.

I seem to recall Jamestown Distributors carries them also.

One problem can be that some standard available sizes don't match the
oriental hose barbs and you won't get much stretch.
