I KNOW THAT VOICE
Documentary Opens HEAR Now Festival
 Thursday, June 19th, 7:30 PM, at the UMKC Student Union Theater (5100 Cherry St, Kansas City) the HEAR Now Festival will present I KNOW THAT VOICE, a 90 minute documentary that puts a face to the voices we all know and love!
Narrated by, and starring, John DiMaggio, (Bender on Futurama,) this film also features many other well-known voice actors, including: Mark Hamill, Hank Azaria, Tom Kenny, and Kansas City's own Tom Kane.

Neil Gaiman & Tom Lopez
Featured at HEAR Now Festival
in Sennheiser / Neumann Listening Room

Author / narrator Neil Gaiman will be featured daily from 10:00am - 5:00pm in clips from the audiobook The Fall of the Kings (2014 2-time Audie Finalist / 2014 Wilbur Award / 2014 Communicator Award) by SueMedia Productions for NGP / Audible.
"This is a special room where fans, producers, and engineers, can compare different headphone and monitoring systems for enjoying, or creating, quality audio productions," explains Festival Technical Director David Shinn.
Actor Ryan McCabe, who appears in the scenes with Gaiman, will be at the Festival and can share how these scenes were created, since he and Gaiman were not recorded together. Along with clips from The Fall of the Kings, the listening room will also feature selections from Tom Lopez's soon to be released Saratoga Noir for ZBS.
Only ALL ACCESS FESTIVAL PASS holders will be able to visit the Sennheiser / Neumann
Listening Room throughout the Festival weekend.

Described as the "...gold standard of narrators," by Neil Gaiman, Simon has been narrating audiobooks for more than 30 years and has completed more than 700 titles.
On Saturday, June 21, 2014, from 1:00pm - 2:30pm, Simon along with Scott Brick, Barabara Roseblat, and Robin Miles will present readings from 'their favorite authors.' at the "Audiobook's Golden Voices" performance.
Copies of The Elephant Whisperer will be available as door prizes (thanks to Tantor Audio) at the Festival for Simon to sign. Simon will also be heard on the public radio program "Right Between the Ears" as one of this year's HEAR Now Guest Artists.
The program will be recorded live before an audience at the Festival on Saturday, June 22nd and then broadcast shortly after on the NPR network. Barbara Rosenblat ( Orange is the New Black / Terminal City) will join Simon on "Right Between the Ears" as she again appears as a HEAR Now Guest Artist on the program.
"I love the opportunity to work along-side this great group," said Barbara. , "'Right Between the Ears' is a fast-paced original sketch comedy show with great writers, cast and crew - it's a fun night for everyone!"
Barbara will also be featured in a special program for children on Friday afternoon (read further down) and will be perform with the NY-based VoiceScapes on Friday night in Audio Vaudeville.

Scott Brick, narrator extraordinaire, will also be among the featured Golden Voice artists at this June's HEAR Now Festival!
Scott will be the MC for the Festival's Friday night, Audio Vaudeville live cabaret show, as well as read on Saturday afternoon. He, along with Barbara Rosenblat and Robin Miles, will also be participating in a Narrator's Roundtable on "Finding the Right Training To Be a Narrator."
Scott has recorded bestsellers for every major publisher, over 650 titles including MYSTIC RIVER,FAHRENHEIT 451, IN COLD BLOOD and HELTER SKELTER. He's received over 50 Earphones Awards, three Audie Awards, a Grammy nomination, and has twice been Publisher's Weekly Audiobook Narrator of the Year.
An active and passionate teacher, Scott recently wrote an intensely detailed and multi-media analysis of the narration process called NARRATING AUDIOBOOKS BRICK BY BRICK, debuting soon on his website ( www.scottbrickpresents.com).
Robin Miles, 2014 Audie winner for Keeping Hope Alive, will also add her Golden Voice to Saturday's readings as well as be part of VoiceScapes performance on Friday evening.
According to AudiFile Magazine, from her first Earphones Award for Cane River in 2002, Robin has, "rocked audiobook lovers with her thoughtful narrations and stunning vocal characterizations. Not only does she wow with her favorite tongues, French, Irish, and Jamaican, her ability to build relationships with listeners while reading makes Miles a narrator of choice."

of Molly Danger by Jamal Igle and produced by Audio Comics. Presented as part of HEAR Now's children program, participants will learn that, "Molly is a very special little girl. She looks - and often acts - like a ten year old, but she's much older and far stronger than it seems.
Co-producer and story adapter Elaine Lee will join Olivia in this session.

Elaine Lee (Starstruck, Vamps, AudioComics) will also be among this year's guests at the HEAR Now Festival.
Along with discussing her award-winning AudioComics productions, she will be on-hand for the NATF Premier of Trans Mars Tango, which she wrote for the workshop.
Directed by Brian Price for NATF, this production features Robin Miles, Phil Proctor, and Sande Sherr, with a supporting cast.
Elaine is an EMMY-nominated actor and playwright, as well as a critically acclaimed creator and writer for comic books and animation. A writer of comics, animation, games, non-fiction, and audio plays, Elaine has created a number of original comics series: Vamps for DC/Vertigo,
BrainBanx for DC/Helix, The Transmutation of Ike Garuda for Marvel/Epic, and Skin Tight Orbit for NBM.
She has also served as writer on titles for DC Comics (Ragman), Marvel (Prince Valiant, The Steeltown Rockers, Saint Sinner) and Dark Horse (Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny). Her short SF stories have appeared in Heavy Metal, Epic Illustrated, Taboo and Charles Vess' "Ballads and Sagas."
Mark Time & Ogle Awards
Return to 2014 HEAR Now Festival
On Friday, June 20th, at the Cinemark Theaters in nearby Country Plaza, h ost Brian Price will share a sampling international audio drama winners from the past 16 years of the Mark Time and Ogle Awards.

The Hear Now Festival will be presenting a special performance for elementary school age children on Friday, June 20th at the Festival.

"Stories in Sound: How a Chicken Named Louise Came to Life Through the Magic of Audio" will feature narrator Barbara Rosenblat reprising her Odyssey-award winning performance.
Sound effects and music, similar to the original production, will be added live for the show.
Thanks to Live Oak Media for their donation of audiobook and books sets to give away at this show.
"This reading and literacy program is aimed at grade school children," explained Festival Director Cynthia Allen, "these two stories were selected because they encourage children to use their imagination and be the heros of their own stories."
Thanks also to Audio Comics for their donation of Molly CDs to give away.

Star Trek & Beyond: The Sounds of Gaming
A special 90-minute session on "Sound Design for Gaming" by premier audio producer and composer Michael Henry ( Cryptic Studios) will be held on Friday at the HEAR Now Festival.
After working for Com/Track (commercial music production, radio and TV) for nearly ten years, Michael made the switch to creating soundscapes and music for computer games. After a stint at Viacom New Media (the gaming division of Viacom/MTV/ Paramount) he relocated to the bay area to take a position with the legendary Atari Games as a composer and sound designer.
Among the many game titles he has worked on, his favorites are Midway's Dr. Muto and Atari Games San Francisco Rush 2049 series of racing games. His work has also appeared in game titles developed by Z-Axis, Activision, and NCSoft.
He also consults with technology companies and has done interface sound design for Palm PDAs, cellphones, and Intel multimedia applications.
Michael is also the co-creator of "Tree of Life Sound Installation" which is being featured throughout the Festival weekend.

Workshop 101: A crash course in
audio theater production and performance!
From writing an original script, to casting, creating sound effects, producing, directing and more, Workshop 101, led by accomplished faculty in the field, takes a small group of participants through every aspect of audio drama production. Classes conclude with a live performance at the Festival's closing ceremony.
Workshop 101's on-site check-in is Wednesday evening, June 18, 2014, between 6:00pm and 9:00pm, at the Festival's main hotel, the Holiday Inn Country Club Plaza -- one day earlier than the overall Festival, as classes begin Thursday morning at 10:00am.
Kansas City area participants, or those not able to arrive on Wednesday evening, can check-in at 8:30am Thursday, prior to the start of the first session. Class materials will be distributed at check-in for participants to review prior to the first class.
Registration in Workshop 101 also includes: Thursday Night Festival Opening Event (June 19th),
passes to Friday evening (June 20th) and Saturday evening (June 21st) live performances, and Sunday Brunch (June 22nd) and Awards Ceremony and Performance.
Registration is limited to 20 participants. Once registration is filled to capacity, we will be put any others who wish to register on a "wait list." If there are any last minute cancellations we will notify the "wait list" in the order in which we received them.

Scriptwriting Competition
Winner Announced at
HEAR Now
..

The 2014 winner of the Marion Thauer Brown Scriptwriting Competition (MTBSC) will be announced at the HEAR Now Festival's "Awards Ceremony and Closing Brunch, " on Sunday, June 22, 2014.
The MTB Scriptwriting Competition will award two prizes: $250 and $100 for original plot-driven, family-friendly audio drama scripts.
"This competition honors my grandmother, a woman who loved great stories. I have been fortunate enough to benefit from the recognition of other scriptwriting contests, so it seemed a great opportunity to give back something to the audio drama community," says Will Anderson, an associate professor in Central Michigan University's School of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts.

All recorded listening and live performance events throughout the Festival weekend will be held primarily at the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Community Christian Church and its adjacent Activities Center, The Cinemark Theaters at the Country Club Plaza, and the Holiday Inn Country Club Plaza.
Shuttle service to all locations will be available to those staying at the Holiday Inn Country Club Plaza via the hotel's shuttle.
