The Elkton Colored School Museum Youth Interpretive Space Project is being developed and led by Youth from Wright’s AME Church who have demonstrated a vested interest in the Elkton Colored School. The Interpretive Space will portray the story of Segregation and the Fight for Desegregation based on the research thesis, Standing in the Schoolhouse Door: The Desegregation of Public Schools in Cecil County, MD, 1954-1965 by Kyle Dixon. It
will juxtapose the resilience of the African American families,
educators, and teachers against the resistance of the community to
providing access to educational opportunities to African American
students. Drama, narration, poetry,
reenactments, dance, and historical events will be used to share the
documented stories of Colored Schools and Desegregation in Cecil County,
MD in the setting of an original classroom within the Elkton Colored School.
