Peer Harm Reduction Drop-in/ Outreach Worker – 4 Positions

 

A Harm Reduction Outreach Peer will use the skills and knowledge gained while working with staff and their own knowledge gained through life experiences as a drug user to become a Harm Reduction Outreach Peer Worker. Peer support is a key to an integrated, client-centered care model and aligned with QWCHC’s vision of providing “A model of urban health care for people where and they need it” which means meeting and engaging clients “where they are at”.

 

Led by the Queen West Harm Reduction program, the Parkdale Queen West CHC Harm Reduction Programs work to meet the program goals of decreasing the adverse health, social and economic consequences of drug use without requiring abstinence from drug use.” [Riley et al] and engage the larger community in harm reduction education, support and services by providing  harm reduction outreach and drop-in services introduce and welcome clients to PQWCHC through relationship building, accompaniment and referral, and network clients to other services.

 

The Harm Reduction Outreach Peer provides expertise to the agency regarding service needs of people who use drugs and who are “at risk” or marginalized groups.

 

All Harm Reduction Outreach Peers will have the support of PQWCHC staff in order to insure their work is safe, productive and self-empowering. Training relevant to the job needs will be provide to those who are hired. 

Harm Reduction Room Shifts includes:

 

  • Preparing & handing out HIV prevention / harm reduction materials & information (condoms,
    needles, safer crack use kits, and safer piercing kits)
  • Training and dispensing Naloxone
  • Providing support, education, and referrals to health & community services
  • Taking part in talks about community trends with staff, students, & volunteers
  • Cleaning and re-stoking drop-in programs  at the beginning/end of each shift
  • Attending monthly meetings, skills-building workshops and monthly supervision
  • Ability to keep accurate records (statistics, supplies, etc.) and do data entry. (NEO)
  • Outreach to neighborhood agencies (on foot and/or bicycle)
  • Support and outreach to Overdose prevention Sites and Supervised Injection Sites
  • Peer Support and mentorship
  • Safe Disposal/handling of used equipment
  • Provide leadership and support to drop-in groups (strong leadership and advocacy skills with an interest in mentoring people with substance use issues)
  • Prepare and cook food for drop-in

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Has lived experience (current or past) with drug use and homelessness or street-involvement
  • Has understanding of social justice and harm reduction frameworks.
  • Promote safer drug use, and distribute harm reduction materials. 
  • Educate their community regarding transmission of HIV, HCV and related issues in order to increase adoption of harm reduction practices and strategies among people who use drugs.
  • Familiarity with Queen West & Parkdale community members and ability to build trust with those who use drugs and/or do sex work.
  • Knowledge & comfort with people from Aboriginal communities, street youth, panhandlers, homeless & under-housed people, injection drug users, sex workers, and gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender/sexual people
  • Drug and sex-positive outlook a must. Anti-oppressive, anti-racist, harm reduction approach.
  • Ability to follow through on commitments & maintain professional boundaries with community members while working in a peer capacity.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
