Anybody playing some fiddle tunes lately that work well on the banjo?
I was playing "Lincoln's Hornpipe" from Ryan's tonight...it's a nice
fit.
Another find of similar titles..."Downfall Of Water Street" in Ryan's
and Buckley's Best Reel from Rice.

I've been playing The Wind That Shakes the Barley as a medley with
Soldiers Joy. Also, Durang's Hornpipe and The Flowers of Edinburgh.

We've been playing a set of Irish Washerwoman, Bully for You, Saint
Patrick's Day in the Morning, and concluding with Irish Washerwoman
again. We tend to pick up some speed as we go along.

I haven't been playing any fiddle tunes, but I have been increasingly
playing at local jams and working on my "playing along with others"
skills (at least, in G and D). I had the fortune to play with a
really excellent young banjoist from the Memphis area on Saturday. He
was so excited to hear the Stroke Style stuff! He's learning to build
banjos (and the example he had with him was first rate), I would not
be surprised if his next project is a Minstrel-type. ;-)

At our regular Tuesday-evening jam, I sometimes use the Ashborn as a
Bass-Banjo, esp. if there is no guitar to provide bottom end.

Last month I brought my tackhead to our old-time jam for the first
time, and managed some of the modern-old-time fiddle tunes that I
normally play in double-d, on my tackhead using dADF#A. It adds an
interesting flavor to the mix.

I don't have a strong repertoire of stroke tunes, but people enjoy
hearing the little bit that I do have.

Hi Marc,

Standard high or low bass tunings? Thanks.

Hi John,

Low bass so far (dGDF#A). I suppose I could go high bass but
sometimes I forget I can retune! Since I'm taking the bass line, I
thump along using only the 3rd and 4th strings. Makes finding the
right notes easier...sometimes!

I also found and worked up "Bird On The Wing Jig". It is a really fun
song and requires no special arranging, other than what is there. I
put it up in YouTube, and Banjo Hangout.
A happy 4th to everybody. It is a nice day im Michigan!
