Apple Pie Day - March 21, 2013
State Capitol - 8 a.m to 4 p.m.
Making an appointment with your legislators can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be.

The main purpose for Apple Pie Day, which is what we call our homeschoolers' day at the Capitol, is that legislators meet families that are homeschooling. If we are going to keep our freedom to homeschool in Oregon, legislators need to know that we are passionate about our freedom and appreciate of the support the Legislature has provided for homeschooling.

Meeting your legislators can be somewhat intimidating for families, but it doesn't need to be. They are citizens just like you. With a few tips and a plan, you and your family should make wonderful memories and have lots of fun.

1. Call your legislators' offices soon to make a 10 to 15 minute appointment with your State Representative and your State Senator. You can find their contact information at: http://www.leg.state.or.us/findlegsltr/.

Here's what you could say on your call: "We are a homeschool family living in the Representative _________'s (or Senator __________'s) district. We will be visiting Salem on March 21st for Apple Pie Day and we were hoping to have our family meet the Representative (or Senator) while we are there. Could we make a 10 minute appointment with him (or her) on March 21st?"

2. Let us know the times for your appointments by emailing Melanie Voorhes at mmv...@gmail.com. The first family from each district who lets us know their appointment times will be the ones to deliver the pies to their legislators. By letting us know your appointment times, we are able to make sure every legislator gets visited on Apple Pie Day and receives an apple pie and some information about homeschooling.

3. Don't forget to bring your camera. Taking a family picture with your representative or legislator is an ice breaker.

4. Arrive at the Capitol at least 1/2 hour before your appointment and check in at the Home Educator's Hospitality Room (Room 50 in the basement). We'll help you get ready for your appointment.

5. If you have time before your appointment, attend one of the half-hour long "Home Education Freedom 101" classes held at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. OCEANetwork board members will answer any questions you may have before your appointment and let you know about any pending legislation of interest to homeschoolers.

6. Arrive at your appointment a few minutes early. Tell the staff, "We're the _____ family and we have an appointment with ______." They will welcome you.

7. When you meet the legislator you can say, "Thank you, Senator _______ (or Representative ________). We're the _________ family from __________ and we appreciate you taking time to meet with us. We are here on Apple Pie Day to let you know that we appreciate the freedom to homeschool. Homeschooling has been very beneficial for our family and for many families in Oregon because we can tailor the education of our children to their specific needs. In fact, homeschoolers score, on average, 20 to 30 percentile points higher on achievement tests than do their classroom counterparts." Of course, you can use your own words.

8. Prepare your children for questions they might receive, such as "What grade are you in?" and "What do you like about homeschooling?"

9. Take a picture with your representative and/or senator. Offer to send him or her a copy and let them know you will use the picture to remind your family to pray for him or her.

10. You really only need to know two pieces of etiquette. Instead of Mr. or Mrs. ________, you address them as Senator _______ or Representative __________. And don't overstay your appointment. When he or she stands up, that's your signal to stand up, too, thank him or her, and leave.

You'll be surprised how quickly 10 minutes goes.

You can find more tips for visiting your legislators on OCEANetwork's website: http://www.oceanetwork.org/publications/article.cfm?id=87.

We look forward to seeing you in Salem on Apple Pie Day, March 21st.

Together, we can preserve homeschool freedom in Oregon.
