We had a nice cozy meeting last Thursday. One new person - Katherine,
who I'm cc'ing on this message. Feel free to contact her if you have
any resources or ideas for her. (And Katherine, feel free to join the
list if you'd like - people post resources and events here from time
to time that you might find useful. Also, please feel free to amend
or add to anything I write about what you said.)
Katherine has been unemployed for several months, having left an
unfulfilling job in the nonprofit sector. She is a photographer and
currently is helping some friends with documentation photography for
their sustainable-chocolate business. She is interested in
photojournalism and filmmaking, particularly documentary filmmaking.
She's interested right now in documenting how the recent changes in
the economy have been affecting real people locally in the Portland
area. She is also open to various types of employment, and has a
varied work background including bookkeeping, HR, and operations
management.
One resource she mentioned was Portland Freeskool, where people can
volunteer to teach any class they would like, and others can attend
for free. http://portland.freeskool.org
Marcus also mentioned a short-term employment resource he had used in
the past, before he began having trouble with a leg injury:
Apparently the Oregonian continually hires people to sell
subscriptions door-to-door. He said he was treated well and had paid
meals as a part of the compensation. I tried searching the web a bit
to find out more about this, but didn't find anything quickly. If
you're interested in finding out more about it, I would guess you
could contact The Oregonian directly.
I hope you're all doing well, and I hope to see you later this month
at our January 27th meeting!
