SUBJECT: is there a TWAB version that is planned using TW version
2.3.0 ?

Hi.... been loving Tiddly wiki for about 1 year now... WOW... I keep
it fairly stock... I use it for a todo list...

NOW.... I use Thunderbird for email though want to use TWAB 2.0
exclusively for contacts....
Then it'll sit in my bookmarks folder with Firfox Portable and VOILA!
Love it!

So, thing is.... I'm cool with using the earlier version of TW that
TWAB 2.0 seems to be based on..

Anyone know IF all the add-ons are gonna work with TW 2.3.0 now, and/
or IF there's gonna be a version on the TWAB site that based on TW
2.3.0 ??? I guess so at some point... I'd rather use the version that
was running on the TWAB site and not try an upgrade with version TW
2.3.0, especially if an update is planned for all the extras that TWAB
usesm forms etc... in the future..... I'd wait if that's the case....

LOVE to know!!!

thank everyone for reading!

Vincent (vdibart) has recently (Feb 21) announced TWAB 2.0,
http://groups.google.com/group/TiddlyWiki/msg/0aad8d82382480b2

This version is based on TW2.2.4

However, there doesn't seem to be anything that would break in TW2.3.0
(though that is not guaranteed).

I just tried the following:

Download an empty TW2.3.0 from
http://www.TiddlyWiki.com/empty.html

Open that file locally.

From the backstage>import:
* select server type = FILE
* URL = http://www.tiddly-twab.com/
* press the Open button
* When the list of tiddlers appears, select the checkbox at the top of
the leftmost column (to select ALL tiddlers).
* scroll to the bottom of the list
* press the Import button
* when done, scroll back to the top of the page and press "Save" from
the backstage menu.
* reload the document

You will now be running TWAB2.0 with TW2.3.0.

Though I didn't do much testing , it *seems* to work just fine.

enjoy,

Yvonney,

Thanks for your question (and for your passion for twab :)

A little background here. Since twab was based on the
MonkeyPirateTiddlyWiki distribution (http://mptw.tiddlyspot.com/) I
chose to keep twab tied to the version core version of TW that it's
using. I might find it more convenient to break this reliance in the
future, but for now it allowed me to get something stable out quicker.

The base version of twab does contain an upgrade to some of the
Tiddlers it relies on (e.g. FormTiddlerPlugin, PartTiddlerPlugin), but
not to the core TW itself.

Hope that makes sense.

Also thanks to Eric for the help.

NICE Vinny... and Eric, I tried the import exactly as you did... I did
it two different ways. Once after importing ALL from http://www.tiddly-twab.com/
via 2.3.0 TW's backend and LEAVING the syncronize checkbox at the
bottom checked, and once by UNCHECKING the checkbox at the bottom...

Both times when I tried to SAVE I got a dialog box saying something
like, [Javascript 'some other word here - can't recall'] as the
dialog box title and inside the little box it said [object, object] or
similar.

I'll now read Vinny's reply again and try to puzzle it out... all
great fun!!!

OK, So, it's not fully working with 2.3.0.
So, IF I can export my data without mangling it...hehehe when 2.3.0
compatibility is happening that would be reason to use TWAB as it is
for now..

I experimented with Monkey, GTD etc etc way back and decided it was
way better/safer for ME to use a stock version of TW and this, for
ME:) has proved sensible as TW has changed a fair bit since the
earlier version...

So, in my simplistic opinion I would be very interested to know IF
TWAB can become more modular at some point and therefore not be
strapped to older already modded versions like Monkey etc... 2.3.0
TW's changes pretty important and towards the future?

BIG thanks!

Yvonney,

I might have given you the wrong impression. To my knowledge twab
doesn't rely on anything in particular that MPTW offers (I might be
wrong of course). I used MPTW as the core version that twab was built
into because that was the version that I use personally, so it was
easy for me when I first released the code.

With that in mind, I'm not convinced that your problems are related to
incompatibilities between twab and TW v 2.3.0. For instance, if you
don't import *every* tiddler tagged "twab" it won't work. I will have
to experiment a bit on my own to prove this out though. I've got a
lot of other things going on right now so I can't promise to get to
this for a week or so. I'll let you know what I find when I have
something meaningful to report.

Thanks again.

WOW so cool Vinny..
Really great to have heard from you, and Eric...
So, When I imported from the URL INTO 2.3.0 it DID save and did 'work'
I guess...

thing is I got the javascript [object, object] pop-up... AFTER
importing and WHILE saving.

So, um, So...
1) There's nothing IN the import to 2.3.0 via the backstage of TW
2.3.0 that is old version-centric perhaps.
2) And, while I DO have to import everything it may just be one part
that's causing the JScript pop-up box... hmmm.. dunno...

I'm certainly interested to be able to use a pretty much stock TW
2.3.0 to import TWAB into..

Hey, maybe it's the little bit of CSS I changed to shorten the header
in 2.3.0 that's causing the JS pop-up..
No likely I guess...

Do you know IF I am to LEAVE checked or UNCHECK the synchronize on
this server box at the bottom when I scroll down to save after
importing TWAB into a blank TW 2.3.0...?

IF I knew how relevant or not relevant that was I could do some
experiments....
ALSO, who knows it could be a firefox script stopping the save going
smoothly OR the import...

I should try with a non modded firefox..... hey I'l try that!!!!

nice-ness!

Yvonney,

Not sure if this helps or not, but I did a brute force integration of
the twab code into a bare copy of TW 2.3.0. You (and anyone else) can
access the results here:

HTML for viewing: http://www.tiddly-twab.com/twab-tw230.html
Zip for downloading: http://www.tiddly-twab.com/twab-tw230.zip

I understand this might not address any potential import issues, but
it does at least provide an alternate core TW for those who would
rather stick with the original distribution. I tested the addition
and editing of a contact, and that seemed to work fine. Let me know
if you find it useful - I might want to link to it from the home page
if so.

Thanks again.

Couldn't resist sneaking in some TWAB time...
i'm not going to import or export any contacts as I've never used
Thunderbird for much in the way of contacts.
It seems like TWAB is gonna be cross platform and very cool especially
cause it appears I can click and go to a URL or bring up thunderbird
directly FROM TWAB...

though in the version I tried based on monkey core I was only able to
get the link to my browser working ...the link that appears after I
SAVE a contact beside the website field. I could not get either of the
email links to work and I do have tbird set as my default email
client. [I use Xp and ubuntu - though XP mostly at this point....]

Anyways..

First this I noticed is, it's a smaller file.... makes sense due to
tiddlers/help etc. not being there and the monkey parts I guess.

Second thing I noticed is that I need to create the New Contact menu
item.... Been a long time since I did anything other than use my
tiddlywiki so I thought I'd ask if I'm right before jumping into the
puzzle.

Third thing is that when I click on ContactsFormTemplate I do get the
form for adding a contact..

Well, all very cool!
So, I guess I should be bold and ask if:
- there's a tip to getting the email URL to bring up a new blank
email. Only the URL to site works when I tried the monkey core
version.

- How can I mess this up.? ...hehehe, in that, I guess me [and
probably others!:)] will need to add a menu item for create new
contact or whatever it was in your release version... afraid I'll
mangle something at the moment... acutlaly it's probably me being a
bit overwhelmed asking for comments/advise as later I can probably
figure it all out.... just really into using the contact today in your
script.

- If I simply click on ContactsFormTemplate and add a new entry I
guess i could just keep doing this and it will add lots of them....

Still thinking in a scrambling mode here... .... sorry for the dozey
questions.... just a crazy monday.... eek... it's not monday!!!

hehehe

Yvonney,

If I could suggest that you hold off making changes for now - I will
add the "Add a Contact" to the version I uploaded this afternoon and
re-upload it later tonight. That should be in there anyway and it was
just an oversight that I missed it earlier.

As for entering contacts into the ContactsFormTemplate, that's
probably not going to work. Even if it did I wouldn't suggest it as
I'm not sure what the side effects would be. It's just a happy
coincidence that it looks like it could be used for that, but in
reality it's not intended to work that way.

As for the email addresses - are you saying that it's still not
working in the version I uploaded today? I can test that pretty
easily. If you're asking why it wasn't working in the old version
with the MPTW core, I'm not sure. That would take me a little longer
to track down. Let me know if I'm making any sense.

Also let me know if you have any other questions I didn't address (no
pun intended).

VINNY!!!!!!!

RE: addressbook and new contacts links

Yes, that's wonderful, I will be more than HAPPY to wait until the
Addressbook/Add contact parts are in the 2.3.0 ..um, maverick's
version..:))) Any day is fine.... and, it's great to know what you
think...

I think it's great to be able to use a stock latest 2.3.0 TW core....
feels right to someone like me who's not modding other than some css..
even if the layout and some monkey core things are missing.... it's
very cool to basically have two 2.3.0 the one I've been using and now
for contacts only the TWAB 2.3.0 TW...
What a difference today's made!!! There's nothing out there I really
wanna use for my contacts and TWAB-TW are cross-platform and browser
base ....so throw them into my firefox portable folder and it's a go!
nice!!!!

Now that TWAB will be my contact database I'll be getting my
understanding back and better on TW. At some point I'd like to be able
to get right in there and be able to do what you did with the brute
force integration. I'm sure interested and I like to know what I'm
doing so down the road and/or when TW goes past 2.3.0 that will be fun
to try too.

RE: email links

So, in both versions, for me that is, clicking on the email link does
nothing [maybe my firefox has a conflicting add-on?] Then I double
click and the tiddly editor for the entry opens up....then I get the
unsaved changes alert box though still no going to email program.... I
think it's my browser and the javascript actually... and it's not a
big deal as it must work 'cause it's the same for me for both
versions ..

Wearing my favorite address on national twab day:)), and thanks!

Yvonney,

I updated the version that I uploaded earlier to have a link in the
sidebar so you can create a new contact. Hope that helps. The urls
are the same:
As for the email link, is there any way you can send me your tiddler -
even if it's only test data? At least that way I can see what's going
on. That's probably the quickest way to figure out that issue.

Let me know if you have any other questions or problems.

P.S. Finally I found someone as passionate about having ultimate
control over your contacts as I am :)

Hi, I am also Twabbing and find it really cool.
I am having problems, however, with an export from Outlook.
I have a Notes field, which is multi-line. eg.

,"note text line 1
note text line 2
note text line 3
"

twab gets out of whack dealing with this.

I already had all the supporting plugins installed in my tiddly so I
only imported twab tiddlers.
You mentioned in one of the other posts that some of the other plugins
had been tweaked.
Was one of those tweaks to be able to handle multi-line "fields"?

If so, I will import that plugin as well.

Lyall,

The reference I made about other plugins was that I included the
latest version of a couple of them. I have not tweaked any of the
plugins as this would quickly lead to chaos for all parties involved.
So, sadly, this is not the cause of the newline issue.

I believe this may be a bug. Until I get to take a closer look at it,
your best bet would be to just remove the newlines by hand before
importing. I understand this will get frustrating if you regularly
import from Outlook, but besides removing the contact entirely there's
probably no other way right now. In the meantime I'll look into a fix
for that and post in this group if a new version is required.

Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.

One more question.

What's the chance of using the 'company name' field as the title if
the first and last names are empty?

My Outlook contacts have multiple instances of contacts which are
companies, which have no first/last name.

Hi Vinny...!

I am now using TWAB 2.0-TW2.3.0 thanks to your amazing work...
I've compared the extra stuff like journal and the additional tags I
think it is in the monk-core version. One cool thing about this
2.3.0/2.0 version is that there just ONE tag for each addressbook
entry... for me in the fact that I'm using it only for contacts and
not a journal etc. well, really nice and clear and not scary as in
stuff breaking.

So, oh yes.... ever since realizing outlook was a dead end with open
source and cross platform and portable becoming obviously best for
me.. I look for a way to have everything I need in the least amount of
programs, hopefully browser based when logical, always portable-
able..hehehe and well, you know...

So, yes I could send ya the tiddler though it hasn't got any data in
it. It's gotta be my firefox and 25 add-ons:) if it does work for you
and most others which seems pretty obvious... Sure will let ya know
and definitely will be writin' back...
you have really made my days better ...I'll play with it for a while
and write back... likely tomorrow or Saturday... I know you're busy so
your work mean a lot to all of us that's for sure Vinny.
This is so great.... contacts there where needed, browser based and
not locked in etc...!

very best Friday and weekend and onward to you.... and best wishes to
all!

FYI: No real problem for me

I simply replaced the newlines with reverse slash 'n' (\n) and the
imported notes display with newlines!

My mechanism for fixing the whole CSV file was to search for lines
that did not start with a double quote, then replace the previous
newline with \n. Repeat.

Then, to search for lines that did not end with a double quote and
replace the trailing newline with \n. Repeat.

It may be that simply pre-processing the import data using the above
technique on the import tiddler is all you need to do, particularly
since you seem to assume a CSV 'record' is only a single row.

You where also correct about 'slowwwwww'.

I found that using about:config in Firefox, adjusting
"dom.max_script_run_time" up to 30 means I did not have to press
'continue' quite so often.
