Username from the Set variable

Is there a way I can obtain the username AUTOMATICALLY from the
variable in the "set" environment variable? (I know this is system
specific, but works on both WinXP, and linux).

That is, if you type "Set" in a shell / command prompt, the value of
the "USERNAME" variable.

On Windows, you could use the script from the following thread:

However, this requires ActiveX, so it probably only works on IE.

I don't think there's a way for the browser to access system variables
on other OSs (which is a Good Thing, due to security concerns).
