Hello and salutations,

I found TiddlyWiki a while ago in college and used it some then, but
have really been pounding on it since I have graduated. I am working
on a book and have been using it for a place to store thoughts and
such. What I am wondering is, what kind of license is it under? Can I
publish said book in the TiddlyWiki format for download? If so, what,
if any, licenses must be present?

Answers would be appreciated,

Thanks,
John

As I understand it, TiddlyWiki is and has always been released under
the BSD license, which means you can do what you like with it.

I just read an article that described three kinds of licenses..

copyright: like Microsoft use. You can't share it with anyone.
copyleft: like the GPL. You have to give everyone copies for free.
copycenter: like BSD. You can take it to the copy center, and sell or
give away as many copies as you like.

Blah blah not a lawyer blah.

Cheers
;Daniel

They say a million monkeys typing will eventually produce Shakespeare.
Thanks to commenters on YouTube, we now know this is not true.

That is outstanding if it is the case! Guess I will check out this BSD
license thingy.

Thanks,

Note also that *plugins* and other tiddlers that you install from 3rd-
party sources are typically covered by whatever licensing terms that
tiddler's author has chosen to use. For example, TiddlyTools
components are licensed under terms set forth in:
http://www.TiddlyTools.com/#LegalStatements
which, in turn, refers to terms defined by a standard
"CreativeCommons" 'Attribution/Share-Alike' license:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/

Other developers have chosen different licensing terms, including:
"freeware"/public domain, BSD, GPL/modified-GPL, CreativeCommons
(assorted varieties), and several others.

As a general rule when installing plugins, always be sure to note the
specific licensing terms of the plugins you are using and make sure to
retain all required tiddler content (i.e., links, documentation, etc.)
as set forth by those terms.

... also, I would strongly recommend that you always contact the
individual plugin developers to request permission, prior to the
publication of your document, if you want to redistribute their work
on a commercial basis, even though it may not be explicitly required
by the specific terms of any given plugin.

Daniel's correct; you can use, modify, sell or otherwise redistribute
TiddlyWiki without needing any additional permission. It's good karma
if you spread the with a credit and link back to tw.com.

So I for sure can use the base TiddlyWiki at tiddlywiki.com? Then the
other main thing I would like to incorporate is a dice roller. I have
seen a couple but none of them have what license they are furnished
under. Could someone direct a TW noob in the right direction? I have
done some searches on the net with little or no luck.

Thanks,
John R

Yes, the latest TW at tiddlywiki.com is definitely BSD licensed.

I wrote a dice rolling macro available from:
http://danielbaird.com/tiddlywinks

It hasn't been updated for nearly two years, but that must mean it's stable, right :)  I license it to you to include in any TiddlyWiki, distributed in any way.  If you become a millionaire please consider buying me a MacBook or something.

Sweet! Thanks. I will see if I can get this 'import' thingy to work.
The MacBook is yours, should I become a millionaire from this
endeavor. Though, I must admit I am considering it more of a Not-For-
Profit project, as I would be happy just to recoup what I have put
into it.

I would love to send a strong, heartfelt 'Thank you' to the creators,
the modifiers, and this group! It is nice to see such a supportive
group.

Thanks!
