Hi-we are new to the homeschooling/unschooling community, and would really appreciate any advice on getting started, legalities and so forth. Also looking for like minded families to get to know in the Santa Cruz area.
Thank you!
Cate

Hi, I am in the cliff/ west side of Santa Cruz. I am mostly unschooling my 6 year old boy and 2 year old girl. My main focus ..:..field trips, outdoors, nature, hiking, baking, state and national parks and their history, library trips, nutrition, unit studies based on current interest, etc etc... I do incorporate some bookwork, iPad programs, etc, so I am not technically an unschooler, but it is minimal, and I prefer unschooling. We do a lot of science, and often explore his interests until he is ready for a new subject. Message me if you would like to meet up!

Hi Cate!

We've been unschooling for almost four years.  I have a 10 year old boy (Joshua) and an 8 year old girl (Jacqueline).  We love unschooling and I'd be happy to talk with you more about it if you'd like.  There is a lot of really good information at www.sandradodd.com and http://joyfullyrejoycing.com.  If you're on facebook, there are a couple of groups you could also join that have discussions ongoing and there is a yahoo group called always learning that Sandra runs that is also fantastic.  How old are your kids?  There is a local homeschool mom who has set up a local meetup group for home/unschoolers and has been doing a wonderful job of getting park days, hikes, and field trips on the calendar which is great to meet others.  You can join here: http://www.meetup.com/HomeCruzers/.

I'm on facebook and would love to meet up with anyone on the list that would like to... You can find me as Brandi Tucker Jones and at the moment my picture is an elephant seal.

A good place to start is at the homeschooling associations' websites. We have two organizations in California: CHN (California Homeschool Network) www.californiahomeschool.net and HSC (HomeSchool Association of California (HSC) www.hsc.org.

Both of these organizations have specific information about the legal ways to homeschool in California. -v
