What to Watch: December 5-11

- Weather permitting, Tuesday will see the 49th running of the Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola.  The 300-lap super late model race was rained out both on Sunday and today.  It is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. CST.  Pay-per-view coverage of the race is available for $29.99 via Speed51.com.  If you already bought the broadcast, you will get to see it whenever the race runs.

- For Sports car racing fans, WC Vision will host a "State of the Series" presentation on Friday at the PRI Show in Indianapolis.  According to a press release sent on Monday, series organizers will touch on a number of topics, including the enhanced TV deal that will see same-day broadcasts of four of the five sprint weekend events.

Monster Energy Named NASCAR Premier Series Sponsor

During a press conference on Thursday afternoon, NASCAR announced that Monster Energy will replace SprintNextel as the entitlement sponsor of what used to be the Sprint Cup Series in a "multi-year deal with options."  No new name for the series was announced.  Read more

Jimmy John’s Signs Extension to Serve as Kevin Harvick’s Sponsor

On Thursday, Stewart-Haas Racing announced that Jimmy John's has re-upped with the team in a multi-year deal to sponsor Kevin Harvick's No. 4 Ford.  In the deal, Jimmy John's black, white and red colors will be on the car for 16 races a year as the primary sponsor.  Read more

Spencer Gallagher to Race Full-Time in XFINITY Series, Will Return to Truck Series

GMS Racing announced last week that Spencer Gallagher will move up to the XFINITY Series, racing full-time in the No. 23 Chevrolet in 2017.  He will also continue to race in the Camping World Truck Series part-time.  Read more

Kaz Grala to Compete for 2017 Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year with GMS Racing

GMS Racing announced on Monday that Kaz Grala will drive the No. 33 Chevrolet in the Camping World Truck Series full-time in 2017 and compete for Rookie of the Year.  Grala, who turns 18 on Dec. 29, will be the youngest member of the rookie class.  Read more

On Wednesday, Cadillac officially unveiled the DPi-V.R., General Motors' new DPi entry in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.  Read more

Jeff Gordon Joins Wayne Taylor Racing for Rolex 24

Wayne Taylor Racing announced on Thursday that Jeff Gordon has joined the team for next month's Rolex 24 at Daytona.  He'll join the Taylor brothers (Jordan and Ricky) and Max Angelelli in one of the new Cadillac DPi-V.R.'s.  Read more

REBELLION Racing Announces NAEC Schedule for 2017

On Wednesday, REBELLION Racing announced that they will compete in the four-race Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup in 2017 with an ORECA 07.  Sebastien Buemi, Nick Heidfeld and Neel Jani will drive.

Q: In 1983, A.J. Foyt was part of the race winning Swap Shop team at the 24 Hour Pepsi Challenge along with Bob Wollek, Claude Ballot-Lena and team owner Preston Henn.  However, Foyt was not originally assigned to the Swap Shop No. 6.  What was he originally scheduled to race that day?

Q:  What is now known as the NASCAR Pinty's Series used to be known as the CASCAR Super Series.  The CASCAR Super Series actually had contingences in place to race on road courses in the rain, but it was a bit different than what you saw the XFINITY Series do at Mid-Ohio earlier this year.  What did CASCAR Super Series teams do to prepare for wet races? 

A: Teams were supposed to hand-groove slicks in order to create a rain tire for use at road courses.  In practice, these rain tires were more like intermediates at best.  Despite the hand-grooved rain tires, it was still possible for rain to stop races.  A 2002 race, the NAPA Presents the Clarington 250, was stopped at half-distance due to rain.  Not everyone chose to use the hand-grooved tires that day.
