Hello Film Co-op Members, Friends and Workshop Participants,

On Saturday December 5th at 1pm I will be presenting my introduction to amateur filmmaking seminar at the local Mac Resource store located at 6485 University Drive in Huntsville, AL.  In order to open this up to those not interested in film making but who'd like to learn to make better family or travel videos, this one is titled "How to Make Short Films and Better Home Videos".  Even when simply documenting the family holiday trip to grandma's you can use the same basic techniques of the filmmaking - planning, shooting masters and cutaways, framing techniques, etc.  But basically this is still my introductory filmmaking workshop that can help you make more compelling short films and videos.

Mac Resource owner, Larry Stram, has been eager to present community based educational events in the training center at Mac Resource and has volunteered use of the facility.  In addition, Apple Computer is providing free on-line advertising and registration through their seminar web page  www.seminars.apple.com  When you go to that web page, you can enter the local zip code (35806) under "Search Events" and it will take you to a listing of local Apple sponsored events and my workshop will be first on the list.  You can read more about the workhop and register on-line.  If you think you'd like to attend the workshop, please go ahead and register on-line.  It's free and open to all.  By registering on-line you'll give Larry some positive feedback and hopefully encourage him to sponsor future community based educational events.

This will be my last chance to present this workshop in Huntsville for a while as my spring workshop schedule has been filling up fast.  If you'll pardon the shameless self promotion, new to my usual lineup of workshops for 2010, I have been invited to present a filmmaking workshop for kids at the Oxford Film Festival under sponsorship of Morgan Freeman's Rock River Foundation.  Also new this year, I will present my workshop to college students and festival goers at Roger Ebert's annual Film Festival at the University of Illinois, Urbana in April.

New this winter: I will be teaching a class on Editing using Apple's iMovie 09 on January 9 at the Mac Resource Training Center.  This workshop is also Free and Open to All (Thanks again to Larry for his support)  iMovie comes free with every Apple computer (if you have an older version, the new version comes included with the "iLife" upgrade).  iMovie 09 is an incredible tool for amateur filmmakers.  Even though it's considerably less capable than Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro or other expensive editing software, its got a great feature set and incredible user interface and its basically Free!  So if you are a MAC user or might consider becoming one in the future, you'll want to attend this seminar.  Even if you don't plan to switch to MAC anytime soon, you can still attend and learn basics of film editing - the same techniques are essential, no matter who's software you may choose.  You can also register for this seminar at www.seminars.apple.com

Finally, our regular monthly filmmaking workshop will be held at my Studio at the Flying Monkey Arts Center on Sunday Dec 6 at 2pm. This workshop is the 1st Sunday of each month, covers topics of interest to participants and is free and open to the public.

Thanks for your time and please accept my best wishes for the Thanksgiving Holiday.  I hope to see you at Mac Resource on Saturday, Dec 5 at 1pm for "How to Make Short Films and Better Home Videos".

Hello all,

A couple of people (including me) had difficulty with Apple's information and registration page this past weekend.  If you attempt to sign up for the workshop through Seminars.apple.com and have difficulty with their registration process, please e-mail or call me and I'll include you on the list for the workshop on December 5th at Mac Resource (6485 University Drive).  The "Seminars" web site seems to require a new account, separate from the one you may already have for iTunes or the Apple store.  I was able to get to the registration page today.

I dropped off some flyers at Mac Resource this afternoon.  I'll post a sign at my studio at the Flying Monkey Arts Center and leave some flyers there as well.  Larry gave me a tour of the Mac Resource Training Center today and it will be great location to host this workshop. Thanks again to Larry for his encouragement and support.

For the many of you who are not Apple computer users, please don't worry.  This workshop is not about what computer you use - it's not even about what camcorder you use.  It is about techniques and skills to help you make better videos.  You WILL learn some new tricks and skills.  I've seen award winning short films made using the cheapest camcorders.  And you, like me, have probably seen some really bad movies made on big hollywood budgets.

We've already got a few people signed up and I am preparing my presentation and packing my equipment, so I look forward to seeing you on Dec 5th.  Please give me a call if you have any questions.

p.s.  If you do have an Apple Computer or are considering an upgrade, don't forget that on January 9th I'll present a workshop on how to edit your short film or family videos using iMovie 09.  This amazing product is one the reasons I have been a loyal Apple computer user since I bought my first Apple ][+ in 1980.

Hello Film Co-op members, participants and friends,

This e-mail is just a quick reminder of the workshop "How to Make Short Films and Better home Videos", tomorrow (Saturday Dec 5th) at the Mac Resouce training center.  This workshop is free and open to all as part of my workshop series for the Alabama Filmmakers Co-op, with special thanks for Mac Resource for hosting the event and Apple Computer for providing the on-line listing and registration capability.

You do not need to register to attend, just show up tomorrow before 1pm.

Also, you do not need to be a MAC user (like me), this workshop has nothing to do with what computer you may use. We're having the workshop at Mac Resource simply because Larry Stram, the owner, invited us with the intent of providing a community service.  PC users are definitely welcome.  (I'm sure Larry wouldn't mind if you stop in the store and have a look ;-)

The Training Center is at the rear of the building and has it's own entrance.

A complete description of the workshop can be found on the Seminars.Apple.Com website but is also summarized below.  I look forward to seeing you tomorrow, 1pm at Mac Resource.

Sincerely,
Don Tingle
