Hello Film Co-op members, workshop participants and friends,
This summer we will once again present "MovieMakers: A Filmmaking Workshop for Kids"
July 12 through 16 (Monday through Friday) from 9am to 2pm.
This workshop is for kids from 12 to 15 who are interested in filmmaking and would enjoy a fun summer learning experience.
The cost of the workshop is $150 per participant and this is used to pay for materials, notebook, snacks, drinks, supplies, facilities, etc. for the workshop as well as a copy of the final DVD.
Day one, the kids will learn about story structure, character development and develop a short story using classic 3 act structure. We'll select locations, cast our actors, gather props or costumes needed for our story. We'll translate that into a script and starting on Day two, the kids will begin shooting their movie. As most of you know, movie making is a team activity and we want each kids to try each crew position and we rotate crew positions between each scene. We'll shoot for three days, getting lots of shots to illustrate many of the principals of film making. On Thursday afternoon, we'll start editing. If kids have a computer at home, they probably already have access to a free movie editing program. By mid day on Friday, we hope to have a rough cut edit of our movie and we'll end the workshop with a premiere party so parents and friends can see what we've been up to all week.
During the week, the kids will assemble a notebook of materials on each phase of movie making. We'll have bottled water, snacks (fruit, chips, etc) and soda for break time. We ask that all kids come prepared for the sun and heat - sun screen is a must and hats are a good idea. After the workshop is complete, I will assemble the final edited movie, behind the scenes video or stills and make a DVD that will be sent to each participant.
While I organize the workshop and serve as Executive Producer, we need a team of parents, adults and older teens to have a successful workshop. If you have time to volunteer, please let me know. We need help with all aspects of the workshop, from assisting as we move from location to location for each scene, helping kids rehearse their lines, supervising set up and tear down, help with costumes and props, even someone to stay at the studio to watch equipment or help kids who come back for supplies or water (this is a good book-reading while still helping out style of volunteering).
The registration form for the workshop is attached. Please feel free to share with friends and family who may be interested. The form is also available for download from the Film Co-op's web site (
www.filmcoop.org ) or can be picked up outside my studio at the Flying Monkey Arts Center.
Thanks for your help in raising awareness of this great kids summer program and for your continued support of the Alabama Filmmakers Co-op. We're now in our 34th year as an all volunteer community service organization and proud to be part of the Flying Monkey Arts Center and the Historic Lowe Mill.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me via return e-mail or my cell phone number shown below.
Sincerely,
