I like Jeremy Brett, personally, but you could argue the merits of this
actor over that until the cows come home. Every Sherlock Holmes fan
has his/her favourite, and you aren't going to change people's minds on
what is a purely subjective matter - everybody is entitled to their
opinion.

Let me re- phrase it.In most peoples opinion, who most resembled Sherlock Holmes as Conan Doyle wrote him.Although a fine actor,I always thought Jeremy Brett was a lot more emotional and dramatic than Holmes appeared in the stories.

In that case I think Douglas Wilmer looks the part - what a shame he
appeared in so few Sherlock Holmes films, but I do like him in 'The
Speckled Band' and 'The Illustrious Client'.

I think Jeremy Brett and the BBC sherlock Holmes really brought the
great detective to life. I have watched numerous actors play the part,
but the seriousness and eccentricity is brought out best by Jeremy
Brett. And also, the BBC series incorporating scenes directly from
Sidney Paget's drawings immortalise Jeremy Brett as THE Sherlock Holmes.

Good point about Sidney Paget's drawings. I was looking at the end of
(I think) 'The Second Stain' several weeks ago and noticed for the
first time that the scene freeze right at the end when Holmes jumps
into the air and throws up his arms wasn't really Jeremy Brett, but was
one of Paget's drawings. The resemblance was absolutely spot on.

I think it has to Basil Rathbone. He was the best. It's a shame he was
only in twelve of the stories.

Although I recognise that I would make the quintessential Holmes far
thinner than Jeremy Brett, he remains to my eyes the best Holmes yet. I
say this due to the amount of eccentric energy Brett put into the
series; he also exposes the brilliant arrogance that no other managed
to do so majestically.

(My 1st post and it's on my favourite Holmes, Jeremy Brett =) )

It's not the physical resemblance of JB to the Sidney Paget's drawings,
it's the "energy" portrayed by JB in accordance to ACD's description
that makes him the closest Holmes we could ever have on screen... at
least to me anyway...
