March 14, 2007

This song is part of the Wesley Project but is a little departure. It fits with the theme of recent Song A "Week" songs and is the beginnings of a collaboration between my friend Karl Sokol and I. Karl is an electronic music composer and we've had lots of fun working together in the past. Can't wait to hear his additions to this piece!

Temple Prayer
words by Charles Wesley, music by Carl Thomas Gladstone
Jeremiah vii 4

Men who slight thy faithful word,
In their own lies confide,
These are the temple of the Lord,
And heathens all beside!

The temple of the Lord are these.
The only church and true,
Who live in pomp, and wealth, and ease,
And Jesus never knew.

Break, and fill the broken heart
With confidence divine!
The formalists confound, convert,
And to your people join.

The temple of the Lord - they pull
Thy living temples down,
And cast out every gracious soul
That trembles at thy frown:

Would you, Lord, reveal these sins,
And turn this joy to grief,
The world, the Christian world, convince
Of all this unbelief!

Peace,
Carl
