A little while ago some friends attended a chruch conference at Lake Junaluska, a resort and United Methodist conference center. Due to the subject matter of the conference, some members of the KKK decided to protest outside the gates. As the call went out, brothers packed their hoods into their pick-ups and Harley's and headed out. I went snooping around some online discussion groups to see what the buzz was. What I found there surprised me. At least one of the American White Knights of the KKK said he was sorry he couldn't attend because he had duties at his United Methodist church that weekend. I wondered if that meant he was clergy. After a while I heard that another group was actively protesting this conference at Lake Junaluska. This time it wasn't a hate group but rather a Christian magazine associated with the UMC. So, I called the president and publisher of the magazine to ask why he and his colleagues found themselves on the same side of a protest as the KKK. He answered that the reasons for his magazine's protest came from a very different starting place than the KKK's. I just wondered how that lead them to the same conclusions. Here's a song that imagines what a day of protest like that would look like.
