Si Se Puede - Today
my sister Mary and I spent some time in our nation's capitol. Along
with playing some tunes for passers-by at the Methodist Building we
gathered in support of immigration reform that respects the humanity of
all those crossing our borders, legally and illegally. On the lawn in
front of the capitol steps clergy from almost every religious tradition
in the USA stood in solidarity with immigrants, laborers, and other
concerned citizens to address this important issue. We watched and
sang as speakers guided the crowd through prayers, choruses, and the
finer points of the immigration bills going through congress as we
gathered. One of the amendments passed in the Senate as we stood there removed the provision that would make aiding illegal immigrants a crime. I think of the churches and border ministries that provide containers full of water out in the desert. These are provided simply to make sure that those crossing the border in desperation don't die from thirst. I'm glad that congress didn't rule that a crime. Maybe they recognized those as acts of mercy and not as crimes. Something about the gathering, the diverse group of people, the simple request to be allowed to stay and work honestly, even the little kid holding the Mexican flag and making the "I love you" sign with his fingers, gave me hope. ![]() After lunch (and after figuring out that I had totally left my wallet in Baltimore and having to get creative with old atm cards and checks made out to "Cash") Mary and I decided to have a little sit in of our own on the steps of the Methodist building situated directly across from the Supreme Court. We rocked for an hour our so to the delight of many a pedestrian. Even the throngs of middle schoolers in town for some social studies fun didn't make too many faces at us as they walked by. Many thanks to the fan who took our picture for us - otherwise it would have been back to Mary trying to set the camera on the ground, bend over to see through the little window, press the button and get back into "Hey we're just candidly singing here." pose. One more night in Baltimore, then off to WV! You stay classy San Diego.
