“No memory is ever alone; it’s at the end of a trail of memories, a dozen trails that each have their own associations.” Louis L’Amour, American writer
In the winter of 2002-’03, Debbie Morris and I had many conversations about how she and her family might best support her ailing father. While I had a background in eldercare, I was frustrated by how hard it was to identify, and time-consuming to locate, the resources that would help Debbie with her Dad. One snowy evening following one of these conversations, Debbie said, “You need to write a book.” I said, “I don’t have time.” She said, “I’ll help you.” And this was how The Portable Caregiver began.
Our vision was to create a notebook to help adult children understand what they needed to do to be respectful, supportive and caring companions to their parents and other family members as they grew older. We planned to offer quick links with valuable resources and provide a single place for families to collect information as their family members’ needs changed, and to offer workshops on these topics.
Looking back now, four and a half years later, it’s a joy to see that, with the assistance of many, we’ve brought the ideas, resources, comfort and confidence of The Portable Caregiver to hundreds of families. The feedback we’ve received has been wonderful. Many have said, “I didn’t even know where to start. Your book makes it seem like I can actually do this!”
However, we’re now at a crossroads. Debbie and I have new jobs and Tom, who’s served as our chief operating officer, has started a new company. It’s time for us to help families differently. Thus, we’ve decided to donate our remaining copies of The Portable Caregiver to the Alzheimer’s Association Chapters in NC in memory of Tom’s mother, Eileen Trabert, whom we have lost to Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association chapters will help us bring The Portable Caregiver to families in need.
Following this donation, which we expect to make by mid-September, The Portable Caregiver will no longer be in print. If you’d like any copies prior to that, please fill out and mail the order form below with your check made to “Metta Journey” for $20 per copy plus tax (if applicable) and shipping. Unfortunately, we no longer are able to accept credit cards.
With this email, I’m signing off. Past Portable Caregiver Google Group messages will remain accessible through the end of 2007. While I’m sad as I write this, I expect that, given our many common interests, our paths will cross again. Thank you for caring about your older family members and for helping us spread the word.
Wishing you and your family a blessed year.
