Keys and Chords, a Belgium music magazine, recently did a CD review of
"City Makes No Sound".
The review was originally written in Dutch but is presented here in
English after using Google Translate. (So it's not a perfect
translation)
Jeff Merchant: City Makes No Sound
21/juni/10 Filed in: CD-reviews
Intriguing soundtrack of city life.
In his Los Angeles home Jeff Merchant is part of the pop scene.
Merchant was the driving force behind the 'Broken Mic', a forum for
kindred spirits in the local alternative scene. He was also a key
figure in creative formations as PG 13, Meta Tonic and Lullabies The
cult ensemble. Just like the dating solo debut, "Window Rolled Down"
tell the fifteen songs on "Makes No Sound City" stories in which city
life is central. Merchant puts it down with wide flared reflections
and beautiful arranged songs. Besides the acoustic guitar songwriter
figure of violins and cellos and enchanting female voices (Evie Sands,
Julia Wolf, Renee Dawson ...) in dreamy songs like "Where's Phillip"
and "Crazy Ship. "Disturbance Call" paints a picture of galling the
hard city life. Chronicles that commute between hope and despair,
depending on the mood very excited or very sad sound. The lightweight
pop of "Children of Light" or "Love Yourself Away 'live on an
undistorted sound sixties including sitars and organs and most
beautiful voices. Personal musical sketches an intriguing soundtrack
forms of everyday life and survive in the big city. No instant
consumptiepop, "City Makes No Sound" is a true growth plate and with
each listen you discover new things. -- Cis Van Looy
