Greetings Gentle People:
Is it HOT where you are? It is very hot up here in Maine - which is very unusual for us, but I love it!!
Got my vegetable garden planted, my flowers are blooming and my head is exploding with ideas - life is good.
I am in the final stages of a portrait commission of a really nice guy that lives in Hawaii. He found me through my eBay listings - after purchasing one of my paintings, he contacted me and wanted to trade a portrait for a beautiful black pearl necklace (he owns a jewelry store that specializes in black pearls). It was a generous offer and a big challenge. Painting a portrait under the best of circumstances is difficult - but painting a portrait without ever actually seeing the person up close and personal is really extremely difficult. Normally, I like to work from life and from my own photographs of the subject from different angles. When you have to paint a portrait from a photograph supplied by the subject or family members, it presents a whole set of difficulties. A photograph will "flatten" the features of a face and will alter the colors and bone structure by washing out the shadows.
But I wanted to try since he is such a wonderful customer. Below is the portrait up to this point. I am still tweaking it here and there but it should be ready to send off soon for my black pearl necklace. A great way to do business, don't you think? Have you ever traded your art for something? Let me hear your stories.
A warm welcome to new collector Liat from New York who purchased "Beach Babies" from eBay.

Peace and sunshine to one and all
