You have my opinion, Tom, since I'm the rider in question.

http://historian2wheels.blogspot.com/2007/04/ride-report-april-8-2007.html

Today's riding was in Philadelphia, in Fairmount Park and along the
Kelly Drive multi-use path. I've hinted at the problems with the
Bicycle Club of Philadelphia's "beginners" ride in another post. Yes,
I was dropped on an instructional ride for beginners, and dropped
without a second glance by the instructor. Yes, the instructor was
rude, and his rudeness probably caused one person to leave the class
at the beginning. Yes, this 'instructor' grabbed my arm while riding,
and nearly caused me to fall. Let me add that I was dropped in an area
I didn't know and didn't have a map for, that the others in the group
were under the impression I left on my own - how did they get that
idea, I wonder? - , and after I by chance met up with the group again,
the instructor told me to "practice skills" while he and the faster
riders continued riding. I'd been advised that cyclists have a 'dog
eat dog' mentality; it appears that as far as beginners go BCP screwed
the pooch.

To give credit to BCP, the club president apologized repeatedly for
the behavior of the instructor. And I take the decision of the other
riders to end the ride early as an agreement that the ride was
mishandled. Personally, getting dropped on, say, a class C ride would
be something I'd expect. Even on a class D ride. But on a ride
specifically designed for beginners? I suppose I should have been
thin, riding a road bike, and with properly working knees like the
other riders. When I was 385 pounds and starting my weight loss, I
went to purchase athletic shoes, and was ignored by the staff at a
Foot Locker store, despite my attempts to get a staff member's
attention. I can't help but wonder if that situation repeated itself
today.

As far as the ride itself went, it lasted about ten miles, the last
three of which were after we voted to end the ride. I was graciously
escorted back to the starting point, the Water Works, by the group.
Once the ride was over, I decided to try to enjoy my day downtown by
getting up to 20 miles, so I rode up and down the bike path along the
river. The breeze was so stiff at times I barely maintained 7 MPH. But
I enjoyed the briskness.

No issues to report as far as the saddle goes. I need to practice
clipping in and out, and standing. I think I'll practice them at home,
rather than travel 75 minutes to do them while healthy riders tour the
park. Total miles today: 20.34.

I've emailed the BCP list offering to lead beginner's rides in a
couple of months. I took your advice, you see, about leading in my
community. Now to get to the point I'm qualified to lead a ride.
