Interesting idea, Tom, except for those of us who are lactose
intolerant. That's many adults. Also, isn't dairy a poor choice for
people who have had bariatric surgery?

One of the books on cycling I picked up suggested toaster pastries as
a budget replacement for energy bars on rides. Any thoughts on this?

My wife uses toaster pastries, but you need to be aware that they do
stimulate an insulin spike and can give you a sugar rush and then
crash.

As to the Choc milk? Lactose intolerance is a possibility, but not a
forgone conclusion after bariatric surgery. I tolerate it well, for
example.

An alternative for LI people would be Soy Milk. Similar fat/sugar/
protein complex, but instead of galactose as the sugar base, they
generally use maltodextrin, which acts in the body in a similar manner
of providing glucose for the blood without spiking the insulin and
gives a sustained fueling instead of a slam into the system.

So, how do you like the group/forum idea here? I'm trying to develop
it as a tool for us Clyde's!

Perhaps not a problem for non-diabetics. And they are far cheaper than
Powerbars or Clif Bars.

You are fortunate. Many adults cannot.

Unfortunately, there's also a side effect of soybean-based food
products that's rather unpleasant. Especially for those drafting.

I like it, but we are the only two posters so far.

The drafting issue can be an advantage in a crit! They don't hang so close on your wheel!;)

Another thing, you don't want to drink milk products, either before or during intense physical activity. The results could be nauseating!

Toaster pastries: Exactly, but it can raise issues with diabetics and I generally was tailoring the info on the site here for inclusiveness of diabetics and other nutritional special issues. Not a problem for most people though. ;)
