Just discovered this one! To have more control over post processing
Terragen 2 images, try this!
(you will need photoshop, may work with other imaging software- not
sure.)
Render image as normal. When done click on save and then choose
OpenEXR format. Open image in photoshop, and choose: image and mode.
You will be given several choices. Pick 8 or 16 bit. When you do
this a HDR conversion box will pop up with sliders for Exposure and
Gamma. Tweaking these will give you control over lighting of the
render, before saving or post working. Just started experimenting
with this one- might be useful for bring out highlights, tweaking
atmosphere's, and I'm sure there is more!
I might try saving different exposures and combine as a HDR, to see
if this will produce any good results.

It should be no surprise that this format is a computer imaging file
type for the motion picture industry- specifically Industrial Light
and Magic.
