This is important so you may see a few reminders.

Please see the important information below regarding the sunset of the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) which will be decommissioned on January 31, 2026. This is the last day fire departments can access their full historical NFIRS data using eNFIRS applications.

If you don’t have a local records management system (RMS) that contains your incident data, be sure to download any data that you need before the sunset date.

Additional details are in the bulletin below and at the NFIRS Sunset webpage (https://www.usfa.fema.gov/nfirs/sunset/).

NFIRS Sunset - January 7, 2026

The National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) will be decommissioned on January 31, 2026. This is the last day fire departments can access their full historical NFIRS data using eNFIRS applications. Starting February 2026, NFIRS will no longer be available to users.

If your fire department needs to export incident data from NFIRS, there’s still time to make a plan. Consider the following questions when making a plan for your data.

  • What data do you need?
  • What records retention policies does your agency, state or local jurisdiction have?
  • What data you already have?
    • Remember that data in eNFIRS is often a subset of local incident data. If your fire department uses a records management system (RMS), your local data may be more comprehensive than the data available in eNFIRS.

Check out the NFIRS Sunset webpage (https://www.usfa.fema.gov/nfirs/sunset/) for more helpful tips about exporting your incident data.

Thousands of fire departments have already onboarded to the new National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS). The transition from NFIRS to NERIS will improve data quality, streamline reporting, support real-time insights, and better reflect today’s operational environment. For more information about NERIS onboarding, please visit the NERIS website (https://neris.fsri.org/onboarding) or contact your NERIS State Data Lead.

The U.S. Fire Administration is excited to have your fire department join the next generation of fire-based, all-hazards incident reporting and data analytics. Visit the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) homepage (https://neris.fsri.org/) for more information about NERIS and the future of incident reporting.
