Cyclists --
I hope y'all got out on the road Saturday in one of the two great t-shirt rides available to you. I heard both were a lot of fun, fun that I, unfortunately missed. Family obligations.
Here, though, it what's up for Saturday:
Saturday, April 5, 2014:
-- There are a couple of options this weekend. The first of which is a local ride. The second of which is a "free" t-shirt ride out of Hewitt. The local ride will be out of the Kempner Brick Oven on the River Road. I realize we do this route twice a month (as requested by several TRK riders) but it should be particularly scenic this weekend as wild flowers and flower trees burst into bloom. Distance options range from 23 miles (Kempner to Oakalla T intersection and back) to 36 miles (Kempner to Watson and back). This is a great ride for experienced cyclists and newbies as well, so if you know someone who is starting out, invite 'em to come. Wheels will roll at 8:30 a.m -- that's 8:30 a.m. Pre-ride coffee and carbs at the Brick Oven at 7:30.
-- Also…The Aware Central Texas Child Abuse Prevention Center is sponsoring the first Aware Bike Tour. Wheels roll at 8:30 a.m. from Hewitt Park, 801 Hewitt Drive in, where else, Hewitt. The ride offers distances ranging from 3 miles up to 100K with loops of 15, 20, 36, 44, and 50 miles in between. This is, according to promoters, a free event. Here's an e-mail I received from organizer Mark Miller: "
Would you consider joining us at Hewitt Park on April 5th at 8am to show your support for abused children? President Ronald Reagan made April, Child Abuse Awareness Month. News 25 will video the start of the bike ride as we go under the narrow "Hewitt Park" Archway Gate. Each Rider will have a Awareness Bike tag as we cruise by. There will be refreshments at the pavilion before the 8:30 start. There are 5 complete Aid stations every 10 miles with facilities, snacks, & bottled water. There are free prizes from Outdoor Waco, Bicycle Outback, and various gift card giveaways. The entire Event is FREE. The 100k course goes through McGregor, near Spacex, to Mother Neff Park (find the hidden token in the cave in under 2 minutes to win prize) & then back to Hewitt Park making a figure 8 scenic route. Total investment by all parties for rider support, prizes, etc. is $1000." Further info is available by visiting www.passtimes.org and clicking on "Projects".
Then, next Saturday:
--The first ever Lampasas Hillaceous Bicycle Tour. Details are available by visiting
http://www.lampasashillaciousbiketour.com. You can register online has been extended to April 7. If you do make the pre-ride registration deadline, the fee is $35. Ride day registration is $45. The ride benefits
Vision Lampasas, a group dedicated to enhancing the aesthetic, social, cultural, and economic welfare of the historic downtown Lampasas District and surrounding areas, and
LAFTA [Lampasas Association for the Arts], also a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding opportunities for everyone to experience the arts, both of which have coordinated with the
Lampasas Chamber of Commerce to bring about this ride. There will also be post-ride wine tasting at
Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden in Campbell Park or you can take a tour of the four local wineries. Parking will be at the Lampasas Middle School, 901 S.Broad Street in Lampasas. A lot of effort has been put into the organization of this ride. It is certainly worth a try. Routes will take you into what is for many current TRK riders, "uncharted" territory north of Lampasas.
That's it for now. See you on the road.
