See the weather note at the bottom!
We have 11 different ACP and RUSA brevets over the April 16-19 time slot. There is a whole tab on the LSR website for those.
If you plan to ride any of those, check in with Dan ASAP, as he will be riding the 1200k and will generally be unavailable once it starts.
BUT, there is also a lil' ol' 101k RUSA Populaire snuck in there on Saturday, April 18th. This is the Gingerbread Man 101k.
Waxahachie actually bills itself as "Gingerbread City". This is due to having a number of old houses with decorative wood trim known as "gingerbread".
The Gingerbread Man 101k starts up north of town, snakes down around town past a number of the old houses, then heads out east to Bristol. Then it returns via the south side of town, passes a few more old houses, and heads in.
Quite a few of the older houses have little signs in front showing the year they were built, watch for those.
Ride Start Location: LaQuinta Inn & Suites, 311 Stadium Drive, Waxahachie, TX.
Parking location: Preferred parking is the Walmart Supercenter, 1200 N. Hwy 77, Waxahachie, TX 75165. This is a couple of blocks east of the motel, ride west on Northgate and turn north on Stadium Drive to get to the motel. There may be parking at the motel also, use your own judgment there, as we haven't specifically arranged for non-guests to park there.
Ride Start Time 8:00 AM.
The RWGPS route is here:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/54598947 See notes on the detour below.
RUSA membership is required. See the RUSA website for details.
Lone Star Randonneurs membership is required. See the LSR page for details. Please get the money and form into Dan prior to the ride.
A waiver is attached. Please print/complete, sign, scan, and email to both me and Dan prior to the ride, and bring the original to the ride start.
A pdf cue sheet is also attached, generated from the RWGPS file above.
Important ride notes:
BEWARE OF ANGLED RAILROAD TRACKS. There are a half-dozen or more different places where this happens on the route. Some of these are severely angled, with big ol' wide gaps just waiting to grab your wheel. Slow down, zig zag across, or stop and walk it across, whatever it takes to pass safely. Saving 10 seconds is not worth a broken hip or other anatomy. Assume ALL tracks are angled until you can see them well; as the majority of them are.
There is currently on-going construction on FM 879 west of I-45. The last time I was through, it was all rideable, but we have the route set up to go out that way and to return via a detour route. I will try to get out there ahead of time and check it out, and if necessary, we can use the detour both ways.
There are two wooden/grating bridges, approach them with caution, as the conditions may vary.
As you approach the dam at Mile 55.9, watch for some lengthwise cracks in the pavement.
The store in Bristol has yummy baked goods, check 'em out even if you don't especially need food there.
There are driving tour maps with more details and maps of the old houses here:
https://www.historicwaxahachie.com/driving-and-walking-tours/Reading these maps does not fit well with bike riding, so ride through and take a quick look-see, then go back later and pore over details if interested.
Long Range Forecast: "Scattered thunderstorms in the morning, then cloudy with rain likely in the afternoon. High 68, low 47. Winds NNW at 10-20 mph." Saturday is a ways off yet, and hopefully, that forecast will improve. The ride is officially "on" rain or shine, but obviously, turnout will vary with the weather. (And note: This route is also available as a perm, if you care to ride it at some other time on your own.)
Currently, I have the names of a half-dozen riders or potential riders, but not sure who is which category. I'll post a list later. And that list is generally understood to mean "We'll ride if the weather's not too terrible."
