Join us the evening of Saturday, August 3rd, 2024, for a 205k RUSA Brevet on the Midnight Rider course.  This is an Overnight Ride, not a daytime ride.

This route starts at the city of West, Texas (not to be confused with "west Texas"), goes to Hubbard, Wortham, and Fairfield, and returns via mostly the same route.  There is a little loop between Hubbard and Coolidge to get the distance over 200k, which also lets you dodge some traffic on the outbound leg.  The only controls are the start, stop, and one info control on that loop.  However, there are 24 hour stores in Hubbard, Wortham, and Fairfield, so you have optional stops about every 20-25 miles.

This is a RUSA brevet per the RUSA listing.  This means you get extra time and extra mileage credit for the extra 5k, but it does not qualify for ACP medals or certain awards.

Parking location:  Park in front of, or to the south of, the West City Hall at 110 N. Reagan Street.  Avoid the 15-minute spots.  Note that this is different from the parking spot shown on the RWGPS map.
Ride Start Location:  The Dollar General parking lot, 508 Oak Street, West, TX.  This is just 3-4 blocks west of the parking area.

Start time:  7:30 PM.

The route is here:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44101258

Lone Star Randonneurs membership is required for the ride.  See the LSR site for details.  Get the form and money in to Dan prior to the ride.
RUSA membership is required, see the RUSA website for details.

Lights and reflective gear meeting RUSA and LSR standards are required due to being a night ride.

A waiver is attached.  Please complete, print, sign, scan, and email to both me and Dan.  Then bring the original to the ride start.

Please exercise extra care staying alert during the ride and on the drive home afterward.  Pull over, take a nap if you need to.  Caffeine helps, but only does so much, too.

Due to the Love's in Fairfield being a fairly busy store on a major freeway, I suggest not leaving your bike unattended there if you can avoid it.

There is one motel in West, the Holiday Inn Express, with rates running around $107 and up as of my checking just now.  It's awkward to work a motel for a night ride due to their checkin/checkout times not being coordinated with ride times.

Long-range forecast:  High of 99 on Saturday, low of 76 Saturday night, humidity 63%, winds SSE at 10-15 mph.  Sunset is at 8:23, moonset is at 8:19, so no moonlight while riding.  In general, night rides are cooler, but sometimes, the temperature is down and humidity is up, and it can still be a sweat-fest.  Anyway, check the forecast right before the ride and see what you're getting into.

Check back here for updates.  Let me know of any questions.
