The share of Jewish students saying they are comfortable with their
religious identity being publicly known has plummeted since Oct. 7 to
just 39 percent.
THE TSUNAMI of antisemitism unleashed in America by the Oct. 7 Hamas
terrorist atrocities has not abated. If anything, it is gaining strength.
This past weekend, bomb threats were emailed to hundreds of synagogues
and Jewish institutions nationwide. According to the Secure Community
Network, which coordinates security arrangements for Jewish
organizations, 199 bomb threats were reported in a 24-hour span. Many of
the threats were timed to force synagogues to evacuate during Sabbath
services. Attacks on other synagogues have been more direct. On Sunday,
an assailant yelling "Gas the Jews!" sprayed foul-smelling liquid on
people exiting the Kesher Israel Congregation in Washington, D.C. In
Albany, N.Y., a few days earlier, a man shouting "Free Palestine" fired
gunshots at Temple Israel while dozens of children were attending
preschool inside.
During the recent Hanukkah festival, large public menorahs in numerous
cities were vandalized or destroyed. In Oakland, Calif., an 11-foot-tall
menorah was smashed and thrown into a lake; "Free Palestine" was
spray-painted in Arabic where the menorah had stood. In Juno Beach,
Fla., it is an annual tradition to publicly light a sand-sculpted
menorah; this year the menorah was knocked down and a large black
swastika placed atop the wreckage. During an anti-Israel demonstration
in New Haven, Conn., a man wearing a keffiyeh climbed the 30-foot-tall
menorah installed near the Yale campus and draped it with a Palestinian
flag.
FBI Director Christopher Wray, who testified on Oct. 31 that the United
States was experiencing "historic" levels of antisemitism, told the
Senate Judiciary Committee this month that the crisis is worsening. Wray
said his agency has opened 60 percent more hate crimes investigations
since Oct. 7 than before then. "The biggest chunk of those," he
confirmed, "are threats against the Jewish community."
But no development has been more alarming than the evidence of
overflowing hostility to Jews and the Jewish state among young Americans.
Antisemitism is surging on college campuses, where reports of Jewish
students being taunted, threatened, cursed, and assaulted continue
without letup. The Anti-Defamation League reported on Nov. 29 that 73
percent of Jewish college students surveyed said they experienced or
witnessed antisemitic incidents since the start of the school year. The
ADL survey, which polled nearly 3,100 students, found that the share of
Jewish students saying they feel comfortable with their Jewish identity
being publicly known has plummeted since October, from 64 percent before
the Hamas-Israel war began to just 39 percent now.
In the latest Harris poll, a detailed survey of more than 2,000
registered voters conducted jointly with the Center for American
Political Studies at Harvard, two-thirds of Gen Z Americans, those
between 18 and 24, said that "Jews as a class are oppressors and should
be treated as oppressors." Among all respondents, by contrast, that
belief was rejected as "a false ideology" by 73 percent. In the same
survey, 60 percent of 18-to-24-year-old respondents believed that
Hamas's "killing of 1,200 Israeli civilians and the kidnapping of
another 250 civilians can be justified by the grievances of
Palestinians." Just 40 percent said no. Among every older cohort, a
majority of respondents said the Hamas atrocities could not be justified.
While the Harvard/Harris poll found that in the aggregate, 81 percent of
American voters surveyed support Israel in its confrontation with Hamas,
among voters younger than 25, support was evenly split between the two.
Similarly, a slight majority of the Gen Z respondents, 51 percent, said
that the "long-term answer" to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is for
Israel to be "ended and given to Hamas and the Palestinians." In all the
older age groups, that view is decisively repudiated.
To be fair, this is just one poll. It likely has a higher-than-normal
margin of error, and some of these findings are at variance with the
answers given by Gen Z respondents to other questions.
Nevertheless, these are shocking results. They bespeak a badly warped
moral compass among the nation's youngest adults — those just leaving
high school and of college age. Smearing "Jews as a class" as oppressors
and calling for the world's lone Jewish country to "be ended" and
delivered to its enemy is nothing less than antisemitism. And as has so
often been the case with noxious beliefs, it has proliferated so readily
among young people precisely because they have been indoctrinated to
think that way.
In recent years, teachers and administrators in many communities have
actively inculcated a left-wing narrative of "oppressor vs. oppressed"
and embraced a mission to "decolonize" their teaching. Some school
districts and college classrooms single out Israel for denunciation and
promote poisonous lessons on "Palestinian dispossession of
lands/identity/culture through Zionist settler colonialism." A few days
ago, the Massachusetts Teachers Association adopted a resolution
demanding an end to US support for Israel and excoriating what it called
"the Netanyahu government's genocidal war on the Palestinian people." It
is hardly surprising that students exposed to such virulent attitudes in
their formative years are far more likely to hold antisemitic views as
young adults.

Define and Dehumanize the Enemy: Jihadists as Nithings or Nidings

It is an ancient principle of magic (which modern people recognize as
stories that reflect a society’s culture and psychology) that
knowledge of a person’s real or True Name delivers power over that
person. What it really means is that, if you know the person’s
psychology, you can gain an advantage over him. It is also well known
that the side that controls the language of an argument controls the
argument. As an example, Hamas terrorists and their enablers refer to
Israel’s military as an “occupation force” and terrorisitic violence
against civilians as “resistance.”
We have long sought a single word that strips the enemy of all
humanity, and reduces him to something less than an animal that is
worthy of nothing less than extermination. As far as we know, the
English language contains no such word, although “dreck” (garbage or
refuse) comes close. “Homo sapiens by BIRTH, subhuman by CHOICE”
describes Islamic supremacists perfectly, but it is a phrase and not a
word. We now propose to refer to Islamic supremacists as nithings or
nidings: a Scandinavian word that strips its object of all humanity.
Webster’s dictionary (1913) defines it as “A coward; a dastard; — a
term of utmost opprobrium.”
We remind readers who object to the dehumanization of Islamic
supremacists that those enemies are already attempting to dehumanize
Jews, and to a lesser degree Christians, with images that could have
come directly from Adolf Hitler. As they have chosen to sow the
dragon’s teeth, our position is that they must now reap their rightful
harvest: the complete hatred and loathing of all civilized human
beings.

Nithing or niding was more than a common insult, because Scandinavian
culture required its subject to fight a duel with the accuser or
become an outlaw: totally devoid of rights, honor, and even
recognition as a human being. Per the Wikipedia entry,
The actual meaning of the adjective argr or ragr [= Anglo-Saxon
earg] was the nature or appearance of effeminacy, especially by
obscene acts. Argr was the worst, most derogatory swearword of all
known to the Norse language. According to Icelandic law, the accused
was expected to kill the accuser at once. …If the accused did not
retort by violent attack yielding either the accuser to take his words
back or the accuser’s death, he was hence proven to be a weak and
cowardly nithing by not retorting accordingly.
A nithing was devoid of all human rights, and he was considered the
enemy of civilized humanity: a perfect depiction of Islamic
supremacists. The word therefore strips the enemy of all humanity, and
degrades him to the status of a wolf or strangler (per Scandinavian
tradition) or a virulent disease like the Black Plague. Black Plague
is a deadly and contagious disease whose vector consists of plague-
carrying rats, while the Green Plague of militant “Islam” is a deadly
and contagious ideology that is spread by bipedal rats: nidings or
nithings, non-humans that raise violent hands to all of civilized
Humanity.
The immediate consequence of being proven a nithing was
outlawing. The outlawed did not have any rights, he was exlex (Latin
for “outside of the legal system”), in Anglo-Saxon utlah, Middle Low
German uutlagh, Old Norse utlagr. Just as feud yielded enmity among
kinships, outlawry yielded enmity of all humanity.[63] …”Yet that is
but one aspect of outlawry. The outlaw is not only expelled from the
kinship, he is also regarded henceforth as an enemy to mankind.”
The actual definition of a nithing is somewhat more involved and
complex, and it gets into sexual perversions and zoomorphical
transformations (Loki’s transformation of himself into a mare to have
sexual intercourse with a stallion, and thus beget Odin’s horse
Sleipner is probably an example), but the following line is pertinent:
“The nithing used its malicious seid magic to destroy anything owned
and made by man, ultimately the human race and Midgard itself[6], due
to its basically unlimited envy, hate, and malice that were nith.”
"Destruction of everything owned and made by Man” (the Palestinians’
destruction of the greenhouses in Gaza comes to mind immediately) and

ANTI-SEMITISM is an ancient derangement, the oldest of hatreds, so
it is strange that it lacks a more meaningful name. The misnomer
"anti-Semitism" - a term coined in 1879 by the German agitator Wilhelm
Marr, who wanted a scientific-sounding euphemism for Judenhass, or
Jew-hatred - is particularly inane, since hostility to Jews has never
had anything to do with Semites or being Semitic.
Perhaps there is no good name for a virus as mutable as anti-Semitism.
"The Jews have been objects of hatred in pagan, religious, and secular
societies," write Joseph Telushkin and Dennis Prager in "Why the Jews?,"
their classic study of anti-Semitism. "Fascists have accused them of
being Communists, and Communists have branded them capitalists. Jews who
live in non-Jewish societies have been accused of having dual loyalties,
while Jews who live in the Jewish state have been condemned as
'racists.' Poor Jews are bullied, and rich Jews are resented. Jews have
been branded as both rootless cosmopolitans and ethnic chauvinists. Jews
who assimilate have been called a 'fifth column,' while those who stay
together spark hatred for remaining separate."
There was Jew-hatred before there was Christianity or Islam, before
Nazism or Communism, before Zionism or the Middle East conflict. This
week Jews celebrate the festival of Purim, gathering in synagogues to
read the biblical book of Esther. Set in ancient Persia, it tells of
Haman, a powerful royal adviser who is insulted when the Jewish sage
Mordechai refuses to bow down to him. Haman resolves to wipe out the
empire's Jews and makes the case for genocide in an appeal to the king:
"There is a certain people scattered and dispersed among . . . all the
provinces of your kingdom, and their laws are different from those of
other peoples, and the king's laws they do not keep, so it is of no
benefit for the king to tolerate them. If it please the king, let it be
written that they be destroyed."
When the king agrees, Haman makes plans "to annihilate, to kill and
destroy all the Jews, the young and the elderly, children and women, in
one day . . . and to take their property for plunder."
What drives such bloodlust? Haman's indictment accuses the Jews of
lacking national loyalty, of insinuating themselves throughout the
empire, of flouting the king's law. But the Jews of Persia had done
nothing to justify Haman's murderous anti-Semitism - just as Jews in
later ages did nothing that justified their persecution under the Church
or Islam, or their repression at the hands of Russian czars and Soviet
commissars, or their slaughter by Nazi Germany. When the president of
Iran today calls for the extirpation of the Jewish state, when firebombs
are hurled at synagogues in London and Paris and Chicago, it is not
because Jews deserve to be victimized.
Many Jews are no saints, but the paranoid frenzy that is anti-Semitism
is not explained by what Jews do, but by what they are. They are the
object of anti-Semitism, not its cause. That is why the haters'
rationales can be so wildly inconsistent and their agendas so
contradictory. What do those who vilify Jews as greedy bankers have in
common with those who revile them as fiendish Bolsheviks? Nothing, save
an irrational obsession with Jews.
At one point, Haman lets the mask slip. He boasts to his friends and
family of "the glory of his riches, and the great number of his sons,
and everything in which the king had promoted him and elevated him."
Still, he seethes with rage and frustration: "Yet all this is worthless
to me so long as I see Mordechai the Jew sitting at the king's gate."
That is the unforgivable offense: "Mordechai the Jew" refuses to blend
in, to be just like everyone else. He goes on sitting there -
undigested, unassimilated, and therefore unbearable.
Of course Haman had his ostensible reasons for targeting Jews. So did
Hitler and Arafat, so does Ahmadinejad. Sometimes the anti-Semite
focuses on the Jew's religion, sometimes on his laws and lifestyle,
sometimes on his professional achievements. Under it all, however, it is
the Jew's Jewishness that the anti-Semite cannot abide.
With all their flaws and failings, the Jewish people endure, their role
in history not yet finished. So the world's oldest hatred endures too,
as obsessive and indestructible - and deadly - as ever.

A federal circuit judge wants the Supreme Court to scrap a longstanding
test for determining what is cruel and unusual punishment. In an October
speech to the Federalist Society, Reuters reported, Judge Thomas
Hardiman, appointed by President George W. Bush to the Court of Appeals
for the 3rd Circuit, advocated a "return to the text and original
meaning of the Eighth Amendment" and an end to the "evolving standards
of decency" test created by the Supreme Court in the 1950s.
In 1958, the Supreme Court ruled that stripping someone's citizenship
for committing a crime violated the Eighth Amendment. Supreme Court
Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote that, to determine what constitutes
cruel or unusual, the Court "must draw its meaning from the evolving
standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society." That
test has since been used by liberal Supreme Court majorities to strike
down death penalty protocols, ban capital sentences for crimes that did
not result in death, and outlaw death sentences for offenses committed
as a minor.
Hardiman called the test a "contrived ratchet" that has fueled a
"runaway train of elastic constitutionalism."
"Its inscrutable standards require judges to ignore the law as written
in favor of their own moral sentiments," he said. "The only constant is
that more and more laws adopted by the people's representatives have
been nullified."
Hardiman isn't alone in his contempt for the test and its offspring. In
May, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law allowing the death
penalty for child rape. The law is unconstitutional under current
precedent, but the Republican governor is attempting to tee up a case
for the Supreme Court's current conservative majority to reconsider that.
To return to the original meaning of the Eighth Amendment would be
tricky, though, because the historical record of its adoption is limited
and its tradition is contradictory.
The phrase "cruel and unusual" was lifted from the English Bill of
Rights of 1689 and included in Virginia's 1776 Declaration of Rights.
Based on this, many originalists argue the Founding Fathers were
concerned with two things: stopping the new federal government from
legalizing European-style torture, and limiting arbitrary and grossly
disproportionate capital punishment.
Americans were disgusted with England's despotic criminal code, which by
the end of the 18th century included over 200 capital offenses. But the
early republic was inconsistent in practice. Virginia still allowed
whipping, branding, and ear cropping.
If Americans thought themselves better than Europe's gory spectacles,
the reformist penitentiaries created to replace them were home to
similar horrors. Nineteenth century American prisons disciplined inmates
through floggings, "shower baths" that simulated drowning, and shackling
them in excruciating stress positions. A pregnant woman and a mentally
ill man were whipped to death in New York's Auburn State Prison in 1825
and 1846, respectively.
The Bill of Rights only applied to the federal government then. It
wasn't until 1910 that the Supreme Court issued a major Eighth Amendment
opinion, ruling that a 15-year sentence to cadena temporal—hard labor
while perpetually shackled—constituted cruel and unusual punishment.
Supreme Court Justice Joseph McKenna noted in his majority opinion in
that case, Weems v. United States, that the record concerning the
ratification of the Eighth Amendment was sparse, but he argued that the
Founding Fathers didn't include it merely to ban thumbscrews. "Their
predominant political impulse was distrust of power, and they insisted
on constitutional limitations against its abuse," McKenna wrote. "But
surely they intended more than to register a fear of the forms of abuse
that went out of practice with the Stuarts. Surely, their jealousy of
power had a saner justification than that. They were men of action,
practical and sagacious, not beset with vain imagining, and it must have
come to them that there could be exercises of cruelty by laws other than
those which inflicted bodily pain or mutilation."
Hardiman is correct that the "evolving standards" test is a blunt
political tool. Standards do not always evolve the way progressives
would prefer, despite aspirational rulings from liberal justices. But
the impoverished Eighth Amendment that Hardiman and other conservative
jurists would prefer would be nothing but a museum exhibit, giving
license to the most punitive fantasies of lawmakers short of bringing
back the rack and breaking wheel.
