Who is the man and the woman I see sitting at various locations in
town? They have a sign that says vet and wife need help. He is tall
and thin, usually wearing nice clean jeans, a shirt and a camo vest,
along with a black p.o.w. hat. He carries a chair on his back. I was
going to get him a cup of coffee this morning but he started to walk
away.
Noticed he and this woman are at the holly hill, so I think they have
a place to stay.
Heard they were also in Cville.
Just wondering if anyone knows anything about them.
thanks

Cat Lady - You have a big heart and I commend you for that. If they
need assistance contact the local VFW and the American Legion. I know
they are always looking for Vets in need of help and will find a way
to provide. However, usually these people are con artists and know how
to play the system. If they are legit, these organizations will find
out. Almost always Vet will have some kind of identification to
validate it (ie. V.A. card, military papers, etc...). Also, the local
police could be of help to investigate without accusing them of
anything.

When John Edwards made the big huge FALSE accusation there were
200,000 homeless Vets that created opportunities for beggers to milk
the system. It's amazing how that works. BTW, the actual number is
about 10,000.

not really sure why this career choice has not been made by more savvy
career minded professionals....

my concern for this man is he apparently cant walk for very long he
has to stop and rest and then he walks again, but I have seen him/them
at different locations in town and I hear they have also been in
Cville.
I dont think they are homeless Fox, I think they are living at the
holly hill.
should I call the vfw?
i dont know anything about these people and I dont trust enough to go
up to them and ask to see their papers!!! I may get knocked out or
something!!

Cat Lady - Just a suggestion. Why not call the local police and
express your concern they are begging and the gentleman apparently has
some physical disability. I'm sure your police are kind and
compassionate professional's who will do anything they can to assist
people in need. At least the one's I've spoken to appear to be that
way...They can make positive identifications and do the right thing.

No, no, no don't put yourself at risk. I wouldn't approach them if I
were you without some strong Lebanon specimen of a male at your side -
just in case. Hey, maybe Bill and Dennis are around to help. They can
give better advice than me. Hey, I have a feeling you can hold your
own with anybody. LOL....

RW - Your comments were NOT FUNNY.... This sweet lady wants to help
people in need and you have to be a smart alec..... Go figure!!!!!!!

called the police and guess what
yep you guessed
no problems here, just a couple of people out to get a handout.
Wanting people to feel sorry for them is
Mr Ford has spoken with them, if this was a veteran situation he would
take care of it.
the walking and stopping, doesnt seem to be a problem either, mostly
stopping to access his surroundings!
ohhh this makes me furious. I would still buy him a cup of coffee,
but that is about it.

rw, I meant to say I could not fight bullets or a bat bigger than
mine, by what I wrote it sounds like I think I am superwoman!!!!! yeah
right

I stopped last week and gave him a ride to Holly Hill. He was all bent
over the way I used to see my uncle and granddaddy and I thought he
needed help. He was walking from McDonalds with food and told me he
has emphysema and that he gets so short of breath that he can't walk
any further. I know that is what was wrong with my family and so I do
believe that story.

I gave him a ride to Holly Hill and that was that.He didn't offer
anything else and I didn't ask.

Days later I saw them down by the old Dairymart with the sign and it
broke my heart until I went back by and noticed he was smoking. I then
wasn't so quick to stop. #1 if you have emphysema you shouldn't be
smoking and #2 if you can afford cigarettes you don't really need my
help.

I do know the cops have stopped to give him rides to Holly HIll too
because I've heard them so they are aware of his presence.

I've never had to walk a mile in their shoes and it isn't my job to
judge one way or the other why someone has chosen or been chosen for
this type life but as others have said there are organizations that
also pass by and usually will help them out if they qualify. I do know
if your heart is in the right place when you offer assistance however
big or small that is what matters.

I watched him for a good amount of time early this morning and I know
the police told me he isnt in any type of distress, it did appear he
was trying to breathe while accessing his surroundings!
Like I said, I will offer a cup of joe to the guy, but nothing else
after speaking with our police

So the police don't think he is having any trouble breathing when he
stops? He's perfected it pretty good then if that is the case because
he sure did seem to be having a hard time when he got in my van and he
never tried to talk to me at all just took the ride.

Looks like E.J., CCL, Mr. Ford, and the police have done their jobs.
All of you are good citizens who care and that is great to hear...It
didn't sound like he was a Veteran but. Street people know all the
ropes and they know if they let you think they are a Veteran that
people will stop and give.... OKAY let's consult with RW, the expert.
What say you good buddy?

Oh EJ let me tell you a funny story. I to years ago would feel sorry
for people in need. One day I was on my way home pretty early in the
morning. I came across a elderly man walking not dressed so well. I
felt so sorry for him I could not just pass him up. I stopped and
asked him if he needed a ride somewhere. He nodded his head yes and I
said well get in. As we started to pull off I asked him where did he
need me to take him. HE put his hand on his throat and a whooo whooo
noise came out. I know my eyes bugged out and I was thinking what the
hell have I done. HE COULDN'T TALK how was I going to know where to
take him and how am I going to get him out of my car. So I was pretty
scared. then it hit me I said to him I will drive and you just point
which way to go. I picked him up about where the lebanon car world is
now and I had to take him plum past st joe I think on that road after
you past the church on the right. This was years ago some of you may
have known of him. He was a nice man but after that I DON'T PICK UP
PEOPLE UNLESS i KNOW THEM. My husband just about freaked when I told
him about this.

So let me get this right....If he was a Veteran, then he is deserving
of your compassion and charity, but if he is just begging, then most
likely he's a fraud? Imagine that! The genius of it!...Let's go deep
undercover, live in a slum hotel, be seen out on the street in 90
degree weather in Lebanon, Kentucky. All the while making a handsome
5 figure salary! Hell! Why didn't I think of that???

(maybe YOU are thinking of a career change RW?)

check yourself first before you start on me! I hate to be taken in
by people like this, I want to help and I just get used. Sorry, I dont
like being used. There are so many people out there truly in need,
but scam artists make it hard for them to get sympathy and help from
me and others. You are familiar with the old saying... one bad apple
spoils the whole bunch? I started picking up old drunks off of second
street when I was 16, I have bought many wino's liquor and cigarettes
thinking they were in need of money or food. I have seen them throw
sandwiches away that people have given them.

dude, if I see him bent over struggling to breathe, hell yeah I will
give him help. Would you?
giving him money to buy cigs so he can continue not breathing well
doesnt seem to be of much help, huh?
I did check with the police and they told me basically he is a
scammer; I wanted them to tell me he was legit.
I will buy him a cup of coffee, but I wont contribute to his scam

I would be willing to give the guy what he needs but to what end? My
point in the last post is to point out that people tend to blame the
poor for being poor while completely ignoring the myriad social and
psychological issues related to being homeless. It has been my
experience that it is easier on the collective psyche when people
react in this manner. The failure of faith based solutions as it
relates to these people demonstrates to me the incipient human
tendency to inject man made justifications for disparaging the poor
instead of seeking to find the root causes behind the problem. Jesus
Christ and Karl Marx both agreed that the poor would always be with
us. But to my knowledge, nobody has given a satisfactory explanation
as to why. I think that Obama's reference to Matthew in his discussion
at Saddle back tends to address this issue to a certain extent. I do
know one thing: The solution lies in recognizing that being poor is
not due to moral or ethical failures exclusively. Often these failures
are symptoms that develop as a result. As I have explained to people
many times on the subject of the Cornbread Mafia - And we all know
that the economy of Marion County was carried by this phenomenon in
the 1980's to some significant extent - People are not just going to
sit around and starve to death because of the failed economic and
social policies of the Government. When the rules don't serve us,
Humans usually innovate by making up their own plans regardless of the
rules. I happen to believe that people like the ones mentioned in
this post tend to serve a valuable role in society as Canaries in the
Coal Mine. The first lesson is not to ignore them or blame them, but
instead to try and discover why they are ailing in the first place.

rw I am not ignoring him/them, but I wont help a felon who has made a
career out of scamming other people.
you are right on what you are saying, although you may be going out on
a tangent alittle, but I dont think this couple/man are true
homeless, or destitute person(s) suffering from some psychological
problem: He may have a psychological problem, but it is keeping him a
career criminal and not a poor person. I think he is making a
conscious choice and is probably refusing the help he really needs,
that has been my experience with people like this.
as I said, meet me at McDonalds and you and I will help him, but I
dont think it is going to make a difference to this guy.
Maybe you could get him a job where you work? I think that is a
wonderful idea. RW, will you get him a job where you work? his name
is Richard, how should he get in touch with you?
You could put them up for awhile: Get them out of the Holly Hill.
make them feel right at home: Be part of your family. You can then
discover what is wrong with him and get him the help he needs. Your
kids would have a built in grandpa, oh how great. You RW are a much
better person than I, you can get him a job, get him the help he
needs, financially support him and this woman until they get their
lives together and make them a part of your family. He could argue
with you about the state of the country, he would be able to have
great conversation with you. We would have to give you great accolades
RW. When are you going to meet with Richard? I want to be there and
see the wonderful expression of gratitude on Richard's face when you
offer your home, a job, and financial support to him. My goodness,
they may even make you a citizen of the year RW. A great
humanitarian.

After reading and watching that video, I think he is doing what he
wants. Also, I wont be part of bringing the Aryan brotherhood into
helping him, as he stated in the video!

my dear RW I am not making light of the situation, honey there aint no
situation to make light of. He is a career criminal who is trying to
scam people, what situation is there?
I think you should offer the man a job; I am stone cold serious RW. No
levity intended.
I dont like it when people like YOU want to preach the virtues of
helping and trying to find the cause of the effect, yet you are in no
hurry to save the man yourself. Hypocritical of ya there boss!
again, check yourself before you come after me.
I have found out this man is a career criminal, what sympathy and/or
empathy should I show him? Yes, when I thought he was a person really
in need of my help, I wanted to get him help, but I find out through
an anonymous email, telephone calls to the police, the vfw and the
disabled veterans, the man isnt as helpless as he wants us to
believe. you are right, my concern dissipated after I found out a bit
more about him. Although, I would still check on him if I see him
struggling to breathe, that is my nature.
I think you maybe in a position to offer this man a job to better his
life: You wont do it, admit it. You are no better than I am.

CCL - Like E.J., Mr. Ford whom I believe is the local VFW Commander,
you acted as a good samaratin by approaching a man and woman whom you
thought was in desperate need. You even put yourself at risk by
offering a cup of coffee and out of concern you contacted local
authorities. You pursued all avenues to help and all of you are to be
commended for having such big hearts. I'm sure if it were possible the
Lebanon Police would run these people out of town.

Based on your earlier postings I suspected the man to be in imposter
by wearing a POW hat while holding up a sign that said Veteran in
need. Based on my experiences Vets who are in need don't conduct
themselves in this manner. Simply, they are too proud to ask for
"hand outs." It disturbs me that he would so dishonestly disguise
himself as a POW. with intent to prey on local citizens to support the
habits of an obvious con artist with a background check to support
that. That behavior is about as low as a person can go.

RW, is playing the old typical political anti war, anti military / Vet
game of making the con man the victim, and you as a person with a
heart of gold as the bad guy. He ought to be ashamed of himself. If
I'm wrong let me be the first to apologize, but I don't think so.

Earlier when I brought John Edwards up, the man who grossly
exaggerated that are 200,000 homeless Vets simply for lowly political
gain, when in fact there are approximately 10,000. Con artist are
seizing on this an an opportunity and I saw 2 of them today in
Louisville. But, you ought to watch them run when they see a police
car.

RW, you would make John Edwards proud, but I believe you to be a
better person than that. Don't be a follower or place yourself on the
disguising level of an individual obsessed to post war statistics
(along with pictures of coffins) to promote political hatred of an
elected leader and his party. Lebanon is blessed to have so many
decent, caring, honorable and giving $$$ citizens. I just wish they
would stand up more like Cat Lady to express themselves, especially on
this board. If this makes me the bad guy then so be it ---> BLAST
AWAY....

Another person stopped and spoke with them explaing that her husband
works with vet's and will do whatever he can to help. She left him a
card to call him BUT he was NOT interested for any help..... Wish we
had a way to get him to move on to another city.
