I'm defragmenting my hard drives right now. I guess that's something I
should be doing every week or so, but I failed to and it's taking
forever!

Do you all defrag regularly? Got any tips on keeping your computer
running fast?

Do any of you leave your computer on every night, or do you faithfully
shut down after each session?

Anybody using a dual monitor setup? Do you like it? I have the
capacity for two monitors but am still using just one. They say you
can increase your productivity by 25% with two...

Defragging is mostl a non issue with today's drives.

Getting rid of spamware and viruses and other nasties is far more
important.

Have you run the free tester at "antivirus.com" lately?

(Or gotten a Mac)

You'd cringe if you measured how much power that computer
is drawing when just sitting there. And if it's an older machine,
you'd turn ashen gray if you saw how much it continues
to pull when you push the fake "off" switch. [a]

(My five or so year old Mac G-3 tower pulls 20 watts when _off_.
Newer iMacs pull a fraction of a watt. I haven't measured a
more recent tower version.)

[a] many so-called "off" switches are what's called "soft switches".
They don't really insert a physical "break" in the wiring.

I hates them.

I leave my computer on at night whenever im downloading a big file.

Techtv told me one time that your computer can boot quicker if you
keep start up programs to a minimum.

you can run diskcleanup to free space on the hard drive

LebFan - Defrag & DISC CLEANUP are great....

BUT What really helps (don't know anything about a Mac computer) go to
START then CONTROL PANEL, click INTERNET OPTIONS, click DELETE for
(temp, history, cookies, web form info, etc...), then double click
DELETE ALL, and press OK......

Some computers may be configured differently but that is how it works
on my XP....

If this exercise takes a long time you, know your computer is working
itself very hard...... I do this exercise at least once a
week.....Hope it helps.....

To sign back on the MC 24/7 you may have to type your complete sign-on
name in but that is just an inconvience and you will only have to do
it one time.....

the only time you really have to defrag is when you've added/removed a
lot of programs or files.... usually once or twice a year is enough,
depending on how much you use your pc...

turning it off at night is great for saving energy, as well as saving
your hard drive from overheating if the fan is not working at it's
best, is dirty, or quits on you...then you can end up with a fried
hard drive....not cool...

yes, removing some of the unnecessary startup items will speed up the
starup of the machine - if you have a ton of icons/files stored on
your desktop, removing them or moving them to another spot on your
computer hard drive will speed up the startup as well.

Actually its better to leave the computer on and configure it to sleep
after 20 minutes...buy yourself a can of air and keep the fan clean as
well as the board by blowing it out once a month...much better for the
hard drive...At least until we transition to flash memory drives...
