Request from Cornell University
Dear Kathleen,
On behalf of the Council of Canadians and Maude Barlow, I thank you for writing and inquiring about Maude’s availability to speak at Cornell University about bottled water and other water issues. I will forward your request to Maude’s assistant, who will get back to you soon with information as to Maude’s availability over the next couple months.
If Maude is not available to speak at Cornell University, it may be possible to have our water campaigner or regional organizer visit the university and speak on water issues. We can explore other options once Maude confirms her availability.
Thank you again for your correspondence. I look forward to looking into possibilities of having Maude or a water expert from the Council of Canadians speak about water issues at Cornell University.
Best,
Melissa Dick

Subject: Speaker Request
from Cornell University
To Whom it May Concern:
My name is Kathleen Alvey and I am a student coordinator of Take Back the Tap
at Cornell University. My fellow students and I have been working over
the past two years to bring attention to the global water crisis and bottled
water. We have held film screenings and panel discussions with Cornell
professors about these issues, but we are still trying to increase
administrative support for bottled water alternatives on campus. We are
also hoping to address the need to improve tap water infrastructure, with
additional water fountains in campus buildings.
This is a critical time for our Take Back the Tap initiative, as Cornell's
contract with Pepsi for Aquafina bottled water is likely to be renewed in the
next year. In addition, we hope to address the impact that production,
transportation, and disposal of bottled water has on climate change.
Cornell University developed the Climate Action Plan in fall 2009, with
specific steps for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, yet bottled water has
been left out of the equation.
We would be honored if Ms. Maude Barlow could speak at Cornell this fall or
potentially this spring, about water privatization, the bottled water industry,
the global water crisis, and sustainable solutions. Specifically, a focus
on cities and universities that have moved beyond the bottle would be
fascinating for the Cornell community.
Ms. Barlow would be welcome to speak at any time during this semester or next
semester, depending upon her availabilities. We could help work out
travel arrangements and costs, if she is interested. Evenings during the
week around 4:30-7PM are typically a convenient time period, as students are
finished with classes.
Please let me know if this is a possibility. It would be an incredible
opportunity for students, faculty, and staff at Cornell to hear Ms. Barlow
speak.
Sincerely,
Kathleen C. Alvey
