Dear friends,
hello again. I am pleased to be able to confirm that the arrangements have been finalised with Richard Denning for our Combat Commander tournamentat this year's UK Expo. The tournament will run on the evenings of Friday 4th and Saturday 5th. There will be 12 places as last year and 4 of them are already booked:
  • Steve Bishop.
  • Paul Laverack.
  • Robert Lloyd.
  • Me, natch.
Unfortunately we won't have the same amount of table space as we had last year. We will have enough to run 6 games simultaneously, but space will be tight. So we'll have to organise our tables carefully.
There are 2 questions I'd like to address:
  • The format.
  • An entry fee for the sake of a prize.
The format
Last year Mike Smith suggested a more structured format, with proper organised rounds and so on. I am happy to go with this if people like the idea. Just to remind you all: the advantages of last year's format were: simplicity and open-endedness. Like I said though: if a more structured format is preferred I will organise that. So I need feedback on this issue; and suggestions of how to organise an alternative format should we decide to go that way. I suggest that we could expect no one to play more than 6 games; and that 5 might be more likely. Again: I invite comment.

An entry fee for the sake of a prize.
I have contacted GMT to find out if they are willing to offer any support, but have received no answer yet. I will try again, and may seek alternatives. I invite all members to investigate any opportunities they think might give us prize support. As for an entry fee: £2/head would give us £24 to play with. What do you all think of this idea?

Publicity
I invite you all to do what you can to drum up support for our tournament. The World War 2 Tactical Guild now has a 3-fold web presence:
I encourage those of you who use either of these sites to join these groups. I'm not yet sure what they might be worth, but I figured it was worth setting them up so that they are available for our use. The fB group has picked up several members from my fB network and has seen some activity; so I'd say that its potential has been demonstrated. More than that only time will tell.

Other news
Conpulsion is Scotland's longest running RPG con. It's run by GEAS (Grand Edinburgh Adventuring Society), the EU student RPG assocation I was a member of back in the 80s. Conpulsion 2010 runs from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th March. The con features ttg and boardgames too. The latter this year will include yours truly running an officially sponsored Conflict of Heroes demo all day Sunday:
The sponsorship includes some special demo scenarios not available to the general public; and discount vouchers redeemable in 4 shops here in Scotland as reward for participants. I am hoping that this will be just the first of an ongoing programme of CoH events I'll be organising. I'm excited about this, as you can imagine. I'd love it if any of you could make it on the day to join in the fun.

That's all for now. Looking forward to catching up with you all again in B'rum in June, if not before. All the best to you and yours.
cheers,
John

Hi John et al.

I'm hoping to have more time available this year so would like to
think I can complete more than the one game I managed last year.
I like the idea of a more structured format but suspect this may be
difficult with the evening slots you have assigned for the event.

I would think just a couple of twists to add a bit more structure
would work.
My suggestions would be...

1) No two opponents may play more than twice (preferably only once -
depends on numbers).

2) Select 6 scenarios from which opponents must choose to battle (Take
a look at some of the tournament scenarios recently posted at CSW).
Lowest ranked player selects scenario and opponent selects sides.
These scenarios tend to be lower unit counts and quicker playing
times, hence more conducive to a more 'formalised' time schedule. This
also allows for you to be selective and pre-plan the game sets
required.

3) The biggest improvement, I suspect, would be to set scheduled
playing times but this is likely to be the hardest to enforce. Again,
the type of scenarios chosen above (2) will help manage playing time
to a degree where you can give better ideas of start times for rounds
and get a higher completion rate with the playing times shorter.

Hope this helps.
See you all in June.

ps (to ALL) - someone needs to take the bragging rights away from Mr
Bishop - are you that man/woman?. ;o)

Barry,
hello again. I've just this morning received another email booking a place, so you make 5 1/2 (that _is_ a provisional there isn't it?). And those suggestions of yours are very helpful. I think they strike a good balance between structure and flexibility. There are also some C3i scenarios which should be good for quick play. I am pleased that we have got this discussion moving already because it gives us plenty of time to decide our format, and me plenty of time to get the logisitics sorted.

Can I here book a place in your Sunday C&C:A tournament?

That's all for now.
cheers,
John

John.

Check out the PrezCon 2010 tourney scenarios designed and recently
posted at CSW by Bryan Collars.
The first is here... http://talk.consimworld.com/WebX?14@@.1dd0d2c6/17931

The other three are further down the thread (message 17651). These
seem to fit the bill quite nicely.

Then there are 4 tournament scenarios listed at the top of the CC
folder at CSW. Looks like these are all RSG generated so not my
preferred scenario type but they may help to give a wider choice.

You could then compliment these with some of the 'smaller' C3i
scenarios to make up the count to your target number.
Of those published to date I would recommend #103 Varsity Blues and
#105 La Fiere Counterattack as having low unit density, fast set-up
and playing times.

Regards

Barry
