Hi Andre and all.  I went to Newlands forest tod;ay at about 3 pm and was told on good authority that:

1.  There was a mugging on the contour path, told by a man who accompanied the two (uninjured) "joggers" to the forestry station where they called the police and laid a charge.  They were mugged on the contour path at the junction with the bottom of Newands ravine.   there were two muggers with only stones as weapons.  The victims had no dogs with them.  The forestry station gave me the details about this and:

2.  There was a second mugging a little later, again by two rock-wielding muggers, and again the victims were two young (?) men, no dogs.  The mugging took place AT THE LOOK-OUT POINT with the bench, which is at the junction  of the road north from the helicopter pad,  and the "level" road that crosses the main stream near the forest station at the wier. This is a heavily used route, with walkers, dog walkers, runners, many not fit enough to go higher up the mountain.

The artcle in the Peoples Post sounds garbled.  Maybe they were confusing all these muggings and the injury/assault did not occur in Newlands forest at all??  The forest station knew only of the two I have mentioned.  They were most helpful and surprised that we seem to get little information from either the police or TMNP

Hope this is useful.  I walked nearly to the countour path both yesterday and today, with my two border collies

Yours sincerely

Hi Paul

I think there must have been three muggings yesterday, maybe all by the same two peoplem as they all occurred at much the same time. The guy that was injured would not have been walking down the mountain to report to the forestry and the police.  I gather he is in hospital. Neither the man who met the first two, nor the forestry guys said anything about injuries to any of the four that came to them.  People's Post by the way said that the victim had not only fallen but had been assaulted and badly beaten up.  It seems like the "assault" wasa pushing him down the mountain and nothing further(?)  People who have been concussed, with or without a fractured skull, usually can't remember exactly what happened to them   For instance, he could have been hit on the head with a rock and then fallen down the slope.

This is very confusing. I actually heard on the radio the mother of one of the victimes of one mugging (2 victims, 2 muggers this time too) tell how her son had been pushed from the path down a slope and had fractured his skull.
