Carol,

This last week we could see the windmills in extreme southern
Taylor Co. from the farm northwest of Winters. These were units
of the Buffalo Gap windmill farm. I have found out that this is all
part of the "West Central Texas Project" and adding up in my head
there are now over 480 windmills finished or about to be put on line.

I went off dplex about the time when a discussion started about
the interaction of monarchs with the large windmill generators.
Did anything come of the discussion? Or did it just fade away.
We were about 12 miles away from the nearest of the units and
could easily see the individual blades as they rotated. I couldn't
find out for sure, but I think these are Vesta units that stand about
200' tall at the hub with blades that are 80 to 90' long, making
each unit stand about 300' tall. At least to us, with the sun shining
on them, they looked like the horizen was covered with tall, skinny
guys slowly rotating three white nets.

>From what I could find out in Winters I think they have finished the
Taylor County and Buffalo Gap part of the project for now. We
thought they were going to come south along US83 into Runnels Co.
but found they are moving westward. They will have work on one large
ranch instead of having to mess with over 500 small farmers and
ranchers.

If you or Mike know someone in that area, it might be worthwhile this
fall to see how the monarchs interact with the windmills. The area
around Abilene (Taylor Co.) gets many reports during the migration.
Someone might be willing to actually watch what does happen ...
do they go under, around, or over ... or into!

Take care ... Harlen

Photos: Looking out from the front of the home
place to the northeast towards Buffalo Gap and
Tuscola and then Abilene thru the gap about 35
miles. Monarchs move across this lowland that
is cultivated and criss-crossed with creeks of
mesquite from that high butte in in the background
and come towards me. San Angelo would be to my back slightly to the
left.

There is a flowing creek behind the house that
Altus's Daddy said would turn orange some years.
