I remember Adam talking about this.  I've never had it happen, but I guess it's pretty common.

This literally happened to Jodi last night. She gave him like $0.13.

You know, under www.fairtax.org there'd be paying taxes on black market income ;)

My Solution

"What's my solution to this mess?  Here it is: A five year emergency moratorium on all but constitutionally authorized federal activity.  Congress can meet to play backgammon during legislative sessions and that's it (to fulfill US Constitution Article 1, Section 4, Clause 2).  Then, after five years, we'll see how much better off we are and start officially removing the stinking rotting carcass we call the Federal Government."
Once again, Anthony, you've come up with a solution that has an absolute 0 chance of happening. The realm of theory is nice, but that's not the world we live in. What we need is a better, fairer, more transparent system. Of course no tax system will be perfect or really acceptable but what we have now is a joke.

Zero chance, I agree.  Keep in mind, I wrote that before I became an anarchist.

Are not all conservatives living in the land of theory when they vote for the lesser of two evils, and a poor, unsubstantiated theory at that?

This is the best part of your post....

I have The Sitter Downers to thank for helping me come to that realization.

I guess that depends on your beliefs as a "conservative." I'm willing to compromise in order to attain a "better" candidate or system as opposed to completely saying "to hell with it all" and not being part of any solution and letting the devil have his way 100% of the time.

Which tool is more efficient?  A ratcheting socket or just wrench with brute force?

The brute force solution (like an overt dictator) has simple, focused resistance.  It tightens the bolts with less efficiency.

A ratchet "gives way" in the other direction 50% of the time, but in the end, the bolt is tightened more quickly efficiently.

Does speed equal efficiency?

You just stated the theory. It does not work, and therefore is useless. Let me restate it for you.

Vote #1: I will compromise. I want 100% of 100, but I will take 90%.
Vote #2 I will compromise. I want 100% of of the remaining 90, but I will take 90%.
Vote #3: I will compromise. I want 100% of the remaining 81, but I will take 90%.

You see where this is going?

Now, IF the pendulum swung both ways it MIGHT balance out, but this has not been happening for years...maybe a century or more, but certainly ever since the government solved the Great Depression. The theory sounds good, and best of all, makes true patriots feel that they are doing their bit, but it fails in the end. You can keep backing a broken theory to feel good about yourself, back another theory you feel is right even if it fails because you already know the current theory is crap, or sit back, wait and watch the False Patriots laugh at the True Patriots while they play in fairy land pretending this is not all going to end up in complete socialism. I choose the third option for the most part. I do not get high on compromising for evil.

Your solution will be to ignore everything I have said, continue to pretend you are making a difference, and be wrong.

Sooooo, the only real solution is to admit there is no solution and act accordingly knowing that by not acting you are only enabling the oncoming non-solution because after all, there's no stopping the anti-solutionists?

Here's the rub...this theorizing only works in politics.
When you're at home with your wife and kids, compromise IS your life.
The idea that compromise is weakness or failure is not reality. If we didn't compromise with our family, friends, etc. the end game would be much worse for us. Compromise allows us to live better personal lives but when it comes to politics, too many believe it's "my way or the highway."
Thus we end up with too many people sitting on the sidelines saying nothing can be done and all is lost.

No, there are other solutions. I offered three. I do not have an alternate theory (option #2) that I am inclined to bother with, but I also will not support an obviously wrong theory just to make myself feel like I am making a difference that I am clearly not making. Anthony is an idealist, I am a realist, you are a puff the magic dragonist.

I have nothing against compromise. I have a problem with compromising for evil. If my wife wanted to compromise and only have sex with one other guy instead of three I would not say, "Ok, I do not want all to be lost. Have fun."

I have never lived by the sea...or frolicked in the autumn mist...well, maybe I have but that's besides the point.
Funny, I think I'm the realist...

Not sure how I'm an "evil" compromiser, but okay.
I'm off to the gym to NOT compromise on the battle of the bulge!
(which I fully expect to win btw)

Keep puffing, you will keep that feeling. Obviously you need to reconsider what the REALity of our situation is. As in, the true state of affairs, not what you wish they were, or even what you believe they are because you would feel like you were giving up otherwise. Reality does not depend on your acceptance of it. We could revisit this in fifty years when it is illegal to be part of a church that openly teaches the Bible, but the reality is that I will be dead because I have not taken care of myself. I would feel better if that were not true, but it is.
