Dear Pat,
Thank you for being part of the exciting and fast-paced pedestrian advocacy movement. You can take a significant step today by participating in the National Walking Survey.
America Walks is committed to making the everyday act of walking safe, attractive and convenient. But, the unfortunate reality is that over a ten year period, an automobile hit a pedestrian every 7 minutes, in cities and rural areas. From 2000 to 2009, 47,700 Americans were struck and killed; and another 688,000 were injured. Today's re-release of Dangerous by Design, a report by Transportation for America, shines a light on these problems.
Your calls and emails are making a difference! Congress recently called for rescissions, or cancellation, of unspent transportation funds from state departments of transportation. I want to thank all of you who responded to our action alert and contacted your state DOT and asked them to preserve pedestrian and bicycle funding sources. If you have not taken action yet, find out more at the Alliance for Bicycling and Walking 'Take Action' site.
America Walks will continue to build support and will occasionally call for action from you to protect walking nationally. You can support our cause today; donate to America Walks and contribute to building a unified voice for walking in America.
Many thanks,
Carter Headrick
America Walks Board President

Got five minutes to help strengthen pedestrian advocacy? Take the National Walking Survey, sponsored by America Walks. It will advance understanding of why people walk and what would motivate people to walk more. Answers are anonymous and a summary of the results will be posted on the America Walks website later in the year!
A few of the questions the survey aims to answer are:
- What kinds of people walk a lot?
-
What are the main reasons they walk?
- Do the reasons they walk change as they age?
-
What are the major obstacles they face when walking?
- How much do family and friends encourage walking?
-
What is the profile of infrequent walkers?
- Why don't these infrequent walkers walk more?
-
How much does living in a "walkable" community affect people's walking?

Dangerous by Design Report is Released ![Speed Speed]()
|
|
As mentioned above, Transportation for America is re-releasing Dangerous by Design, a report that looks at pedestrian fatalities and talks about the importance of how we design streets with regards to their safety. The report provides data on pedestrian fatalities over the last 10 years, providing some ranking of metro areas across the country, and ranking counties within a state. America Walks is working with Transportation for America and other partners to call on Congress to protect dedicated funding for walking and biking and support for the Complete Streets Bill.
Communities throughout the nation have organized local releases of the report, and America Walks encourages you to send it around to your network too. Read the full report here.
